The Golden State Warriors made significant changes to their roster at the NBA trade deadline by trading for Jimmy Butler from the Miami Heat in exchange for Andrew Wiggins and Kyle Anderson, two crucial rotational players. Butler managed to play four games in his new team colors before the All-Star break commenced, which was sufficient for Draymond Green to confidently assert that the Warriors would clinch the championship this season; a bold statement he made during the All-Star weekend.

On Sunday, after his sixth appearance for the Warriors where he scored 18 points and contributed to a 24-point victory against the Dallas Mavericks, Butler proved his worth. Postgame, Green detailed his reasons for the earlier championship declaration, attributing it to the impact of the team’s latest addition.

“I just know what it looks like,” Green explained to Marcus Thompson II and Sam Amick of The Athletic referring to his claim during the All-Star weekend. “All season, it felt like we were on the verge of greatness but couldn’t quite clear the final hurdle. There was always something missing. Now, that missing piece is here. That piece is [Butler].”

Since Butler joined, the Warriors have shown marked improvement, boasting a 5–1 record post-trade, a significant turnaround from their struggle to maintain a .500 record before his arrival. However, despite these victories, their position in the Western Conference hasn’t seen a dramatic climb as they still sit in ninth place.

The early performances suggest that the Warriors are significantly more formidable with Butler on the court, and these successes have evidently bolstered Green’s confidence. Yet, it remains uncertain if they can sustain this level and truly contend for the championship.
