Damian Lillard has decided to allocate his portion of the winnings from the Milwaukee Bucks’ triumph in the 2024 Emirates NBA Cup in a charitable manner.
Prior to the Bucks’ conclusive 97–81 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder, which secured them the NBA Cup and its accompanying monetary reward, Lillard shared his intentions for the prize money when questioned.
“Having been in the game for quite some time, I’m not about to squander it or lose my head over it,” Lillard commented to ESPN as he made his way into T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. “I’m thinking of giving back to our support staff, the trainers and all those who are here day in, day out, even when we players get to head home. I want to do something to help them out.”
Each Bucks player under a standard contract receives $514,971 for winning the NBA Cup. Lillard, after mentioning his plan to support Milwaukee’s training staff, noted that he would retain a part of the bonus for personal use.
“Not all of the 500,” Lillard chuckled in continuation. “Just a small part of it.”
Although the NBA Cup bonus may seem minor compared to the salaries of high-earning stars like Lillard and Giannis Antetokounmpo, it represents a significant boost for the Bucks’ younger players and those on lower salaries.
Even though he doesn’t necessarily have to, it’s commendable to see Lillard using his earnings to benefit the often-overlooked heroes of his team.
