After participating in just two games during the NBA summer league, Cooper Flagg was benched by the Dallas Mavericks, though Flagg himself pushed to partake in an additional match.

Flagg had a modest start with only 10 points and missed all five of his three-point attempts in his initial summer league game against the Lakers. However, he made a significant comeback in his second game, scoring 31 points against the Spurs. Despite the Mavericks’ initial plan to restrict Flagg to two games, Flagg expressed his desire to play another game to demonstrate that his strong performance in the second game was not just happenstance.

A Mavericks front office executive, Keith Smith of Spotrac, praised Flagg, saying, “From the moment we picked him, he has surpassed our expectations in every way. He’s a fantastic young man, both on and off the court. Here’s an interesting tidbit: He didn’t perform well in his first game, but completely turned it around in the second. Despite our two-game plan, Cooper approached us and the coaching staff, asking to play a third game. We had to decline but his request really made us smile. He expressed concern that people might think his second game was just a stroke of luck. His request just goes to show his dedication to excellence.”

Despite his eagerness, the Mavericks chose to sideline their top draft pick to conserve his energy for the upcoming season. Flagg’s request to participate in another summer league game reflects his competitive nature, yet he will have to wait for the regular season to showcase his skills once more.
