The Boston Celtics are planning to secure coach Joe Mazzulla for an extended period.

The team has decided to award Mazzulla a multiyear contract extension, a decision that was revealed early Friday. Although the exact duration of the extension hasn’t been disclosed, it comes on the heels of a particularly successful period for both the Celtics and their prodigious coach.

In his three-year tenure with the Celtics, Mazzulla has achieved a record of 182-64, translating to a winning percentage of .740, the highest in the NBA for coaches who have helmed at least 100 games.

After taking the reins from Ime Udoka, who was abruptly suspended in September 2022 and later dismissed, Mazzulla steered the Celtics to a 57-25 record in 2023, followed by a 64-18 record in 2024, and a 61-21 record in 2025. The pinnacle of these achievements came in 2024 when the Celtics clinched the NBA title, marking Mazzulla as the youngest NBA champion coach since Bill Russell in 1969.

Born in Rhode Island and known for his unconventional public image, Mazzulla helped lead West Virginia to the men’s Final Four in 2010 as a player. His popularity has grown significantly in New England and elsewhere. The new contract extension appears to be a nod to his growing influence and success as the Celtics face the upcoming season without star forward Jayson Tatum.
