The Boston Celtics’ journey in the NBA playoffs concluded on Friday night with a defeat by the New York Knicks, dashing their hopes for a consecutive championship title.
Despite the disappointing end to their season, Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla chose not to linger on the defeat during his postgame press conference. Instead, he praised his team for their achievements over the past season.
“Ultimately, we had set a goal which we did not fulfill,” Mazzulla remarked. “However, that should not overshadow the determination and hard work demonstrated by our players. … They truly put their all into this season—even though we fell short of a championship. What they have accomplished cannot be diminished. This is simply the cost of pursuing great ambitions, and that’s just the nature of it.”
The Celtics had briefly raised hopes with a victory in Game 5 at TD Garden on Wednesday, a game they were expected to lose following Jayson Tatum’s Achilles rupture and subsequent surgery in Game 4. However, their momentum halted abruptly on Friday when they found themselves trailing by 33 points in the second half, ultimately losing the game 119-81.
Meanwhile, the Knicks advanced to their first Eastern Conference final since 2000, much to the delight of their supporters. They are set to go up against the Indiana Pacers starting Wednesday.
