With the regular Lakers lineup taking a rest at the Chase Center, Coach JJ Redick gave James the nod to start. He seized the opportunity, playing 35 minutes and accumulating 17 points from 7-of-17 shooting, alongside grabbing four rebounds, making three steals, and blocking a shot.
This game was a significant turnaround for the 20-year-old rookie, who had previously struggled in the Lakers’ initial five preseason games, scoring no more than four points in any match and shooting only 20%.

“It allowed me to just be myself,” James explained post-game. “That’s when I feel most comfortable—just playing my own game without overthinking. It felt great to just play freely.”

During the match, one of the highlights was James’ spectacular dunk from a lob pass by teammate Quincy Olivari during a fast break. He also scored his first three-pointer of the preseason, having missed his previous seven attempts from beyond the arc.

James is expected to spend considerable time with the G League South Bay Lakers this coming season to further refine his skills. However, his performance on Friday hinted at the potential impact he could have when given more playtime.
“It’s a nice boost of confidence as the season approaches,” James remarked. “Even if I don’t make the main rotation and am not playing, going into practice and possibly G League games with this confidence will be key.”
The Los Angeles Lakers are set to begin their regular season this Tuesday night against the Minnesota Timberwolves, while the South Bay Lakers will start their season on November 9 against the Salt Lake City Stars.
