Derrick Rose, celebrated former Chicago Bulls icon and NBA MVP, officially declared his departure from professional basketball after 15 remarkable seasons.

Ahead of his formal announcement, Rose hinted at his retirement in a message shared on his Instagram profile.

“The mental framework inherently equips one with the tools to realize their aspirations,” Rose expressed in his post.

Having played with teams such as the New York Knicks, Cleveland Cavaliers, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Detroit Pistons, Rose paid tribute to these communities and his initial team, the Bulls, by placing heartfelt messages in their local newspapers.

In celebration of his career, the Bulls shared a tribute video on their account on X (formerly Twitter).

Rose, selected first overall in the 2008 NBA draft, quickly established himself as a premier player and a formidable scorer. He clinched the Rookie of the Year Award at just 20 years old while playing for the Bulls and earned his first All-Star selection the following season.

In 2011, Rose’s career reached a pinnacle as he became the youngest player to receive the MVP award.

However, his promising trajectory was abruptly disrupted by multiple injuries, limiting him to only 39 appearances in the 2011-12 season. A devastating ACL tear during the postseason led to him missing the entire following season.

Rose made a comeback but never fully returned to his pre-injury form. He played for various teams throughout the rest of his career, finding a niche as a valuable sixth man for the Timberwolves, Pistons, and Knicks.

“Basketball has always been my greatest passion,” Rose shared with NBA Insider Chris Haynes. “From my teenage dreams of joining the NBA, which I achieved, this isn’t just a farewell; it’s an expression of gratitude to the sport that shaped my life.”
