With a promising young roster, the Trail Blazers are hopeful that their players will mature into a formidable team. However, rebuilding can often be a lengthy process, and Portland may be reluctant to undergo a prolonged period before becoming contenders again.
In the ever-evolving landscape of the NBA, star players often become unhappy, leading to unexpected trades. Portland finds itself in a unique position with a stockpile of young talent and draft picks that might tempt other teams into making significant trades.
In a recent trade scenario proposed by Bleacher Report’s Andy Bailey, the Trail Blazers might acquire star forward Brandon Ingram from the New Orleans Pelicans. Ingram has been available for trade for some time, and Portland could potentially secure his talents.
In this proposed exchange, Bailey suggested that Portland could send center Deandre Ayton to the Pelicans in return for Ingram.
“For the Blazers, taking on Ingram’s $36 million salary, which is close to Ayton’s $34 million, could make sense as Ingram’s contract expires soon, while Ayton’s runs through 2025-26. This might not align with a rebuilding strategy, but it would allow Portland to gain financial flexibility by not having Ayton’s final year on their payroll,” explained Bailey.
Portland currently has a surplus of players in the front court, potentially facilitating a trade involving Ayton. The emergence of rookie Donovan Clingan, who has impressed the franchise, could further motivate Portland to consider trading Ayton.
Ayton could be a valuable addition for the Pelicans, providing them with additional size in their front court. This trade could benefit both teams.
Since Ingram is on the last year of his contract, Portland would not be heavily impacted financially if the partnership doesn’t pan out. However, if Ingram integrates well with the team, he could become a key player for Portland moving forward.
Ingram has been performing solidly this season, averaging 22.5 points, 5.9 rebounds, 5.1 assists, 0.8 steals, and 0.5 blocks per game. His skills have progressively improved each season, making him a potentially excellent addition to the Trail Blazers.
It’s uncertain how aggressively Portland will pursue rapid rebuilding, but they certainly have options available should they choose to expedite their progress.
