The recently launched Netflix documentary, Starting 5, offers an intimate glimpse into the lives of five NBA stars, and was highlighted by an intriguing episode featuring Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards and Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum during a 2023-24 season game.

In a standout November 2023 game against the Celtics, which the Timberwolves won 114-109 in overtime, Edwards shone brightly by scoring a game-high 38 points. His defensive prowess was on full display, especially in key moments against Tatum, including a notable play early in overtime where Edwards successfully wrestled the ball from the Celtics standout.

Postgame, Edwards was captured by Netflix’s cameras openly mocking the idea that Tatum could be considered the league’s top player, a sentiment echoed by some.

“You seen Tatum trying to get me on the switch, locked his ass up 2 times. He started talking s—. Tatum was talking crazy, saying, ‘Yeah, I’m here,’ then I said, ‘I’m coming again.’ Talking ‘bout best player in the league, y’all trippin’.”

Although Edwards won that particular duel, Tatum had his revenge in their next encounter, where he scored 45 points leading the Celtics to another overtime victory. Despite this, the ultimate triumph was Tatum’s, with the Celtics clinching the NBA championship that season.

However, Edwards’s performance throughout the season, including his pivotal role in driving the Timberwolves to their first Western Conference finals since 2003-04, proved he is rapidly approaching the league’s elite tier.

Edwards’s candid comments about Tatum are now public, potentially fueling a fiercer rivalry for when they next clash on the court during the 2024-25 regular season on November 24 and January 2.
