In a surprising turn during the second quarter of the NBA Cup group-play game on Tuesday, Los Angeles Lakers’ Anthony Davis took an unconventional route on an offensive play against the Phoenix Suns, originating his attack from the audience seating. The Suns ultimately defeated the Lakers 127-100.

With just over two minutes left before halftime, Lakers icon LeBron James tried to pass the ball inbounds to Davis. However, the pass was intercepted. In his effort to retrieve the ball, Davis collided with Suns’ Jusuf Nurkic and ended up in the front row of the Footprint Center’s stands.

Initially looking frustrated while sitting among the spectators, Davis didn’t stay passive for long. As play continued, Suns’ Bradley Beal scored a layup from the turnover. Meanwhile, Davis, with a slight smirk, stealthily advanced towards the hoop from the sidelines, outpacing the Suns who were slow to defend.

Lakers’ forward Rui Hachimura saw the opportunity and threw a long pass to Davis, who completed the play with an effortless dunk, contributing to his game-high 25 points, despite the team’s overall loss.

A classic backdoor play, executed from an unexpected location—the stands—just as if it had been strategically planned by the Lakers.
