Streaming Continues to Outpace Cable
Streaming services’ popularity continues to surge, outpacing traditional cable. According to data from Nielsen, the National Basketball Association (NBA) is now considering ending its 35-year relationship with TNT in favor of Amazon. As of May 2024, streaming services account for 38.8% of TV viewership, outstripping cable’s 28.2% share.

In a tweet, Nielsen revealed that streaming’s share reached a historic high of 38.8% in May, while NBC’s Kentucky Derby topped broadcast ratings for the same month. In May 2023, the gap between streaming and cable stood at 36.4% vs. 22.8%, respectively.
This rapid shift towards streaming is hardly surprising, yet it’s intriguing to see how quickly the landscape is changing. It also raises questions about the future of traditional broadcasters like CBS and Fox and their NFL Sunday afternoon games.

A few notable observations from the data:
– Despite criticism over the NFL’s decision to exclusively stream Thursday Night Football on Amazon, Hulu outperformed Amazon in terms of viewership in May.
– The NFL’s decision to sell a couple of Christmas Day games to Netflix seems justified given the platform’s dominance in the streaming market.
– Peacock’s 1.1% share of the streaming market is surprisingly low, raising questions about how this figure might change if it didn’t have exclusive rights to the WWE Network.
ESPN’s NHL Commentator Responds to Criticism
Sean McDonough, ESPN’s NHL commentator, addressed criticism regarding his performance during the Stanley Cup Finals in an interview with Adam Schein on SiriusXM’s Schein on Sports. Despite his illness during the Oilers-Panthers series, McDonough has faced backlash from fans.
McDonough admitted he was bothered by comments about his perceived lack of energy. He has been calling games for over three decades and expressed hope that fans would understand this is not his usual style. Despite his condition, he decided to push through with the support of his bosses.
NBA Finals Fails to Impress
The NBA Finals this year were a disappointment, with the best highlight being when Celtics guard Derrick White chipped a tooth during a game. A reader asked why I found this year’s NBA Finals so distasteful.
To clarify, the long gap between the conference finals and the finals killed the anticipation for the Mavs-Celtics series. The series ended in five games without any suspense. Furthermore, the wide point margins in Games 1, 4, and 5 made the games unwatchable.
The disinterest in this year’s NBA Finals wasn’t unique to me. The series averaged 11.3 million viewers, a 3% decrease from last year’s Heat-Nuggets series. This year’s Finals was the lowest-rated and least-watched since the Spurs-Cavaliers series in 2007, barring the two COVID-affected series in 2020 and 2021.
Dodgers Stage Remarkable Comeback
The Rockies were leading 9-4 against the Dodgers into the ninth inning on Tuesday night. However, the Dodgers pulled off a spectacular comeback to win 11-9.
Dodgers’ Teoscar Hernandez hit the game-winning three-run homer after the first base umpire ruled a checked swing on what appeared to be a strike three swing. Rockies right-fielder Jake Cave’s reaction to Hernandez’s winning home run was a highlight of the match.
Remembering Willie Mays
Willie Mays, who passed away recently, is remembered for a wild brawl between the Dodgers and Giants in 1965. The fight even saw some players threatening to use bats.
