The NBA season is well underway, offering fans several engaging matchups every evening. However, on November 5, the schedule surprisingly shows no games lined up.

What’s the reason for this? It’s quite straightforward.

Why is the NBA Court Empty on November 5?

The NBA has intentionally left November 5 game-free because it coincides with election day in the United States. This move is part of a broader effort by the league to encourage its viewers, young and old alike, to go out and vote without having to choose between doing their civic duty and watching basketball.

This scheduling also benefits the players, allowing them to vote in their respective home states without the complications of game-day travel.

Is This a New Approach by the NBA?

This policy is a recent development. The NBA first implemented a game-free election day in 2022, during the midterm elections. This year marks the first time the presidential election will occur without any NBA games scheduled.

What Motivates the NBA to Take This Step?

Since 2020, the NBA has actively promoted voting among its fans. In anticipation of this and past elections, all teams have worn “VOTE” t-shirts, and stars like LeBron James have made public declarations of their plans to vote. This is part of a league-wide campaign to mobilize fans to participate in elections.

In a demonstration of this commitment, James Cadogan, Executive Director of the National Basketball Social Justice Coalition, shared insights in an NBC News interview. He highlighted that the NBA does not usually adjust its schedule for external events, but made an exception for election day due to its importance to democracy.

Cadogan also emphasized the NBA’s efforts in promoting civic engagement and the importance of voting.

Will NBA Games Continue Later in the Week?

Absolutely! The break on November 5 is just for one day. The NBA will resume with a full schedule of 12 games on November 6, continuing the season as usual.
