Jean Reno and Franck Dubosc headline Netflix’s new film based on the popular multigenerational game. What do the early reviews say?

Video games are not the only ones being adapted into stories. The Werewolves of Miller’s Hollow, a popular card game created by two French developers, has been transformed into a Netflix adventure comedy where a family finds themselves in the 15th century following a game night. The cast includes Jean Reno, Franck Dubosc, and Suzanne Clément in leading roles, with Jonathan Lambert and Grégory Fitoussi also featuring. Children of various ages join in on the fun as well.

So, is the film worth watching? According to La Voix du Nord, it is “a joyful family entertainment”. Les Numériques offers a more tempered view, praising “a lively cast, led by Franck Dubosc,” who “pulls the audience into a fast-paced adventure that easily entertains, though it sometimes gets bogged down with too many ideas”, not all of which hit the mark. On the other hand, L’éclaireur Fnac criticizes the film for its “all too predictable cliches”. “While the plot is sorely lacking in originality, the artistic effort in the costume and set design deserves praise,” they add.

Inspired by Jumanji

Produced by Radar Films (The Old Geezers), the project was led by François Uzan (Lupin, Family Business), who co-wrote the screenplay with Céleste Balin (Sam). François Uzan, also directing, drew inspiration from films like Jumanji, The Goonies, and The Visitors. The film was shot in the Czech Republic at Barrandov Studios.

For context, the game has already inspired a video game by Ubisoft called Werewolves Within, which was adapted into a feature film in 2021 in the United States under the same name Werewolves (available on Prime Video), and also a real-life game shown on Canal+ launched by Fary and Panayotis Pascot.
