Former standout guard Rajon Rondo, known for his exceptional understanding of basketball, is finding a new way to apply his knowledge this season.
It has been reported that Rondo will join the Milwaukee Bucks, taking on a role that has yet to be clearly defined, and he is currently contributing as a guest coach during the team’s training camp.
According to a report by Baxter Holmes of ESPN on Thursday afternoon, Rondo’s involvement is expected to be significant.
“You’ll see him a lot,” said Bucks coach Doc Rivers to Holmes, hinting at Rondo’s extensive participation without giving away too much.
Rondo last played in the NBA in 2022 with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Since then, he has faced legal challenges, including a May 2022 incident where he was accused of brandishing a firearm at a woman, though the emergency protective order later was dismissed. He was also arrested on drug and gun charges in January 2024.
“There’s a lot of factors that go into coaching,” Rondo explained to Holmes. “It’s not as simple as deciding to become a coach; there’s a lot to learn, like the early morning meetings and countless hours spent reviewing game footage.”
Nonetheless, the four-time All-Star seems ready for this new challenge.
“I just think there are certain people who are meant to be coaches,” said Rivers, who previously coached Rondo to an NBA Championship in 2008 with the Boston Celtics.
