The Toronto Raptors have made the historic decision to retire Vince Carter’s No. 15 jersey, a first for any player in the team’s history, as announced by team president Masai Ujiri on Friday.
During a community event in Toronto, which also featured the unveiling of a newly renovated outdoor basketball court named after him, Ujiri publicly shared the news alongside Carter.
“We are retiring your jersey at the Scotiabank Arena with immense pride and honor. Congratulations, Vince, on being the first jersey to be elevated to the rafters,” Ujiri expressed.
An emotional Carter was seen shaking hands with Ujiri, evidently moved by the honor in the city he considers his second home.

“I was profoundly thankful upon hearing the Raptors’ plans to retire my jersey this November in the very arena where my NBA journey began, and which holds countless cherished memories,” Carter shared in a statement. “I eagerly anticipate experiencing this milestone with my loved ones and the Toronto fans, who made my tenure with the Raptors incredibly unforgettable.”
Carter’s NBA career commenced in Toronto, where he played for more than six seasons following a trade for his draft rights by the Golden State Warriors in the 1998 NBA draft. Selected fifth overall, Carter went on to participate in over 1,541 career games across 22 years.
He maintained averages of 16.7 points and 4.3 rebounds while shooting 43.5% from the field. Carter’s illustrious career also includes eight All-Star selections, two All-NBA team honors, and a recent induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame this past August.
