This season marks a new chapter for Russell Westbrook as he embarks on his journey with the Denver Nuggets, the sixth NBA team in his illustrious 17-year career. Westbrook signed a two-year contract with the Nuggets during this offseason.

As a veteran of multiple NBA teams and a nine-time All-Star, Westbrook is no stranger to facing criticism from fans of his former teams. He anticipates receiving a mix of reactions, including boos, from spectators when he plays his first game as a Nugget in the upcoming season. Such a response is something he sees as a badge of honor, a sentiment he shares with the late Kobe Bryant.

“Like the late Kobe Bryant used to say, if you’re getting booed, it means people respect you. If nobody’s reacting, that’s when you should worry,” Westbrook shared with the press last Thursday.

The Nuggets’ 2024–25 season opener is set against the Oklahoma City Thunder, the team with which Westbrook spent the majority of his career. Drafted fourth overall by the Thunder in 2008, he remained with them until the end of the 2018–19 season. The upcoming game will take place at the Nuggets’ home court, the Ball Arena, where Westbrook is likely to receive a strong reaction from visiting Thunder fans.
