The Dallas Mavericks took the NBA by surprise when they clinched the top pick in the 2025 NBA Draft Lottery, an event occurring just three months after they executed what many call the most shocking trade in NBA history. This lottery win has stirred mixed feelings within the NBA community, especially since the Mavericks traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis under the cover of night. Many question whether the Mavericks merit a player of Cooper Flagg’s caliber following that controversial deal.

This victory in the draft lottery represents a significant triumph for the Mavericks’ organization, providing the front office with a way to correct past mistakes and rekindling hope among the fans. But what do the players think about these developments?

Mavericks forward Naji Marshall shared his excitement on the “Young Man and the Three” podcast, hosted by Tommy Alter and Marshall’s former teammate at New Orleans Pelicans, Trey Murphy III. Marshall was surprised when he learned about the Mavericks winning the draft lottery.

“I was at my place… I was watching, then I realized I forgot it was on. I switched on ESPN and there it was in the top five news. I saw our team name appear and I was like ‘What?!’ It kept counting down, three, two, one, and I started jumping around. I couldn’t believe it, like how?… I’m thrilled, man, so thrilled… I admire [Cooper Flagg]’s game. He’s a champion, I love his style, his intensity… I’m eager to see him develop into a superstar in the league.”

While Marshall and Flagg may share a position, the Mavericks are exploring ways to utilize them together on the court. Coach Jason Kidd has previously positioned Marshall as a point guard during the Play-In Tournament, a strategy they might continue to explore in the absence of a dedicated point guard until Kyrie Irving’s return. Both players are also noted for their strong defensive skills on the perimeter.

However, it will be some time before these plans are set in stone, as the first round of the NBA Draft isn’t scheduled until June 25th.
