ESPN’s Shams Charania reports that the Houston Rockets and experienced guard Fred VanVleet have agreed to postpone the May 9 deadline for the team’s option on his contract until June 29.

The 31-year-old has a contract option worth $44.9 million for the upcoming season, which the team is currently not prepared to exercise. However, there is still a chance that the option could be activated before the new June 29 deadline, and both parties are open to discussing a contract extension in the meantime.

There is also a slight chance that VanVleet may no longer play for the Rockets moving forward.

After spending the initial seven years of his NBA career with the Toronto Raptors, VanVleet has been with the Houston Rockets for the past two seasons. Over 60 games this season, he recorded averages of 14.1 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 5.6 assists, shooting 37.8% from the field and 34.5% from beyond the arc.
