Even though the basketball season has concluded for both the Los Angeles Lakers and the Dallas Mavericks, these teams are still generating significant buzz in the NBA circles. The trade involving Luka Doncic moving to the Lakers from Dallas in exchange for Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a future first-round draft pick continues to dominate discussions.

While a majority criticize the transaction, there are some who support the Mavericks’ decision. These supporters commend the Mavericks’ General Manager, Nico Harrison, for his bold and business-minded approach to the trade. An NBA legend also shares this viewpoint, siding with the few who defend the decision.

Penny Hardaway, currently coaching at his alma mater Memphis, shared his thoughts on the Luka Doncic trade in a conversation on “The OGs” podcast, hosted by Udonis Haslem and Mike Miller, his former assistant at Memphis. His insights were unexpectedly supportive of the trade.

“Nico is my friend, and I need to tread lightly here. I hold Nico in high regard. But speaking frankly, it took courage for Nico to stand by his beliefs and go through with trading Luka. We must remember that Anthony Davis is incredibly talented too, and no disrespect to him. Luka is younger and could very well be the face of the league, making it a challenging decision. However, if the team stays healthy, including Kyrie [Irving], they could very possibly reach the Western Conference Finals,” Hardaway explained.

Given Penny Hardaway’s close ties with Nike through his signature shoe line, notably the Foamposite, and his relationship with Nico Harrison, it’s not surprising he offers a balanced perspective. This trade will undoubtedly continue to be a topic of debate and analysis for many years, with more opinions expected to emerge as the offseason progresses.
