A primary reason for the split was the Kings’ inability to progress beyond the play-in tournament again this year. This outcome follows the Kings breaking a 16-year playoff absence in the 2022-23 season, a time during which McNair earned the title of NBA Executive of the Year.
The article from The Athletic reveals that McNair was opposed to the decision to terminate head coach Mike Brown midseason. Brown’s unexpected departure led star player De’Aaron Fox to request a trade, and he was subsequently exchanged in a deal that brought Zach LaVine to Sacramento. Additionally, there were uncertainties about McNair’s agreement to sign the experienced DeMar DeRozan last offseason, although DeRozan was eventually signed.
Moreover, there was a disagreement between McNair and owner Vivek Ranadive concerning the role of interim coach Doug Christie. According to The Athletic, Christie is likely to shed his interim status, supported by Ranadive. McNair’s reluctance to dismiss Brown initially suggests he might have reservations about Christie’s long-term suitability as head coach for the Kings.
In the end, it was McNair who left the organization after a crucial meeting with Ranadive following the game on Wednesday night, which led to a mutual agreement to part ways.
