Following the acquisition of Luka Doncic, the Los Angeles Lakers have ignited a winning spree, prompting one gambler to place a significant bet on them clinching the NBA Championship.

Ben Fawkes, a senior sports betting analyst at Yahoo!, reported that the bet of $100,000 was placed on the Lakers at BetMGM Sportsbook at +1000 odds, potentially yielding a $1 million profit if they win the title.
Currently, the Lakers rank fourth in the championship odds at BetMGM, trailing the Thunder (+185), Celtics (+200), and Cavs (+550). Their odds are slightly better at FanDuel and DraftKings, standing at +1500 and +1400 respectively.
The choice of BetMGM by the bettor was likely due to their willingness to accept a larger bet. FanDuel, on the other hand, offers more lucrative payouts for smaller stakes.
Since Doncic joined the team, the Lakers have won 18 out of 28 games he has played, and hold a 15-8 record in matches featuring both Doncic and LeBron James.
The addition of Doncic has also significantly boosted their odds for the championship. Before the trade, their odds were +4500 at DraftKings, improving to +2000 post-trade, and currently, they stand at +1400.
With their strong performance post-trade, the Lakers secured the third seed in the Western Conference and are set to face the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round, with odds favoring the Lakers across major betting platforms.
The Lakers have an implied probability of 9.1% to win the championship according to the +1000 odds at BetMGM, compared to the Thunder’s 35.1% probability at +185 odds.
It’s understandable that this large bet was placed on the Lakers, considering their high-profile roster and substantial fanbase.
Last year, Doncic led the Mavericks to the NBA Finals, and LeBron James, a four-time NBA champion, along with the rising star Austin Reaves, have significantly boosted the Lakers’ performance.
Since acquiring Doncic, the team’s scoring average has increased from 111.9 to 116.2 points per game, with their offensive rating improving from 115.3 to 119.8.
If the Lakers overcome the Timberwolves, they would next face the winner of the Warriors-Rockets matchup. Looking ahead, a potential Western Conference Finals could see them against the Thunder, Nuggets, or Clippers.
