The recent addition of Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers, teaming up with LeBron James, has been a major talking point following his transfer from the Dallas Mavericks at just 25 years old.

Since the trade on February 1, Doncic has participated in only four games. However, his impact on the squad has been significant and immediate. The presence of Doncic on the court has notably simplified the gameplay for his teammates. Dorian Finney-Smith, the team’s forward, is one such player who has noticed a marked improvement.

In a humorous comment to the press on Monday, Finney-Smith mentioned the enhanced shooting opportunities he’s been getting since Doncic’s arrival. He described his shots as “butt-naked wide-open,” a testament to how defenses are stretched thin trying to cover both Doncic and James, as reported by Jovan Buha of The Athletic.

Although Finney-Smith has not been shooting as well as he might like in the three games he has played alongside Doncic, he attributes this to rushing his shots rather than the quality of the shots themselves, which he admits are better than ever.

JJ Redick, the head coach, also praised Doncic’s influence on the team. He pointed out that Doncic’s mere presence on the floor relieves pressure on the rest of the team.

“What truly sets him apart is his ability to simplify the game for everyone else,” Redick elaborated, as reported by Lakers beat reporter Mike Trudell.

While Doncic’s talent is unmistakable, it is often the subtle aspects of his play that do not immediately stand out but are crucial to his role. His readiness to drive to the basket keeps the defense on their toes, which in turn creates opportunities for his teammates. This effect is already evident among his new colleagues at the Lakers.
