The Exchange is a Kuwaiti TV series directed by Jasem Al-Muhanna, featuring two female stock traders during the 1980s. It has been available for streaming on Netflix since February 13, 2025.

Created by Nadia Ahmad and Adam Sobel and directed by Jasem Al-Muhanna, The Exchange marks the first Kuwaiti series on the platform. Its debut season, launched on February 8, 2023, quickly climbed into the top 10 rankings across numerous Arab countries and France, resonating due to its relevant societal themes, including women’s roles in society and the effects of the Gulf War on the Middle East.

The Exchange, set towards the end of the 1980s, follows the rise of two women in Kuwait’s stock market sector. Although the main characters are fictional, the series is inspired by true events. The second season of The Exchange became available on Netflix on February 13, 2025.

What is the Plot of The Exchange?

Munira and her cousin, Farida, navigate through the male-dominated, patriarchal society of 1980s Kuwait. Amidst the looming threat of the Gulf War and Saddam Hussein’s impending invasion, the Kuwaiti stock market begins to collapse. Despite these challenges, the two young women attempt to break into the exclusively male traders’ club, a realm of deeply entrenched male privileges. With their skills and sheer determination, Munira and Farida strive to carve out their space, though they risk losing everything overnight.
