Steve Kerr, head coach of the Golden State Warriors, expressed his astonishment over the Kings’ decision to let go of Brown. Brown had previously served under Kerr as the associate head coach of the Warriors from 2016 to 2022.
“I’m really upset by the news,” Kerr said to reporters on Friday. “Mike is not just a great friend but also an excellent coach. I’ve spoken to him, and we all understand that these things are part of the business. However, it’s still shocking, especially since he was voted Coach of the Year unanimously just eighteen months ago. Considering where the franchise was before Mike and where it stood in recent years, his firing is unbelievable.”

Kerr also reflected on how Brown’s firing made him appreciate the stability he has experienced with the Warriors. During Brown’s tenure, the team secured three NBA championships prior to his appointment as the Kings’ head coach.

“We all face tough periods, but this is the NBA. I’m lucky to be part of an organization that values long-term commitment and supports us through difficult times,” Kerr commented.
Kerr highlighted the lack of patience shown to head coaches by the Kings under owner Vivek Ranadivé’s leadership since 2013. In contrast, the Warriors have maintained the same head coach since 2014—Kerr himself.
Denver Nuggets coach and former Kings coach Michael Malone openly criticized Ranadivé, remarking, “It’s not surprising that Mike Brown was fired, as I was let go by the same individual. What really angers me is how it was handled. They lose five games straight, he’s heading to the airport after practice and media duties, and then they call him to fire him. Absolutely classless and cowardly.”
Other NBA coaches also expressed their disbelief at Brown’s sudden firing. Rick Carlisle, head coach of the Indiana Pacers, mentioned, “I was utterly shocked by the firing of Mike Brown today. He is a pinnacle of integrity in our profession, and the news was just stunning.”
Jordi Fernandez, head coach of the Brooklyn Nets, shared during a press conference, “Mike is excellent at his job. In my view, one of the best. His influence was significant to my career. It’s sad news and while it’s part of our industry, it’s still hard to accept, especially just a year and a half after he was named Coach of the Year.”
