In his two-year tenure as head coach of the Boston Celtics, Joe Mazzulla has led the team to remarkable success, including reaching the Eastern Conference finals and, more notably, winning the NBA Finals last season, securing the team’s first title since 2008.
The Celtics’ impressive performance has been primarily built on an aggressive defensive strategy paired with exceptional three-point shooting abilities. This season, the team has achieved the second highest offensive rating in the league at 119.9, trailing only behind the Cleveland Cavaliers, and they lead the NBA with an average of 19.0 three-point attempts per game, successfully making 37.2% of these shots.
When recently questioned by journalists about the criticism from NBA fans regarding the league’s frequent three-point shooting, Mazzulla responded by comparing the situation to other sports.
“It’s an interesting perspective,” Mazzulla said. “In the NFL, for instance, fans don’t complain about high scoring games… My question is, why is high scoring in basketball viewed negatively compared to other sports?”
Joe Mazzulla on fans that believe watching teams jack up threes is boring:
“In the NFL, people aren’t like, ‘I want to see less scoring’ … Scoring is up across other sports. My question would be: Why in basketball is scoring being up an issue, as opposed to other sports? pic.twitter.com/cmeFNqvJbP

Mazzulla makes a valid point. Other sports leagues such as the NFL and MLB have implemented rules that challenge defenses and favor offenses. However, in the NBA, some argue that excessive scoring may be diluting the quality of play.
This debate surfaces amid ongoing discussions about the NBA’s falling TV ratings, a hot issue currently.
But according to Mazzulla, more scoring should be seen as a positive development for the NBA—and certainly for the Celtics.
