During the third quarter of Friday night’s game, Boston Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla received a technical foul as his team battled the Washington Wizards to a victory.

The technical foul was issued while Mazzulla was restrained by assistant coaches Tony Dobbins and Sam Cassell from approaching the referees. Mazzulla’s frustration stemmed from a missed foul during an attempt by Jaylen Brown to score.

Mazzulla later admitted that the technical foul was intentional.

“Did you notice the shift in the atmosphere?” he responded when questioned about his frustrations. “It wasn’t just about firing up the team, it was more about altering the atmosphere. I felt that was needed at that moment.

“Sometimes, you just have to make those kinds of decisions,” Mazzulla added. “Our team was performing well; it wasn’t necessary, but it seemed like the right move to change the environment.”

And indeed, the technical foul seemed to spark a change. Trailing 66-63 at the moment, the Celtics surged on a 13-4 run immediately after the incident, eventually securing a 108-96 victory.

With a record of 13-3, the Celtics are now preparing for their next game at home against the Minnesota Timberwolves. The game is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. this Sunday at the T.D. Garden.
