The Piano Lesson marks Malcolm Washington’s directorial debut, produced by his father Denzel Washington and featuring his brother John David Washington. It brings us into the life of an African-American family torn apart by the legacy of a valued piano.
This film is an adaptation of August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play from 1987 (not to be confused with Jane Capion’s The Piano). Its distinguished cast and the deeply moving and significant themes it explores make it one of the most anticipated films of the year. The Piano Lesson is being shown in select theaters across the United States before its release on Netflix on November 22.
What is The Piano Lesson About?
Set in the 1930s Pittsburgh, a family’s precious piano becomes the center of conflict between Boy Willie, who wants to sell it, and his sister Berniece, who is determined to keep it. The piano not only holds the potential to fund land purchases but also carries the memory of their ancestors. The dilemma poses a question: should they let go of a painful past or preserve their ancestral legacy? The uncle of Boy Willie and Berniece tries to mediate, yet he is also plagued by ghosts from the past.
