Historic Four-Year Championship Run
Making its fourth consecutive appearance in the state title game, Unity Christian has established itself as a dynasty. The 11-0 Lions punched their ticket Saturday with dominant play throughout the postseason. They’ll face a familiar foe in 10-1 Lafayette Christian, the only team to push them close this year.

The championship meeting marks a rematch of the season-opening contest. Unity won convincingly 20-0 on Aug. 15. However, the Lions’ head coach David Humphreys emphasized that nearly an entire season has passed since that first meeting. “We know what to expect physically,” said senior lineman Davis Blankenship. “However, almost a whole season has gone by, so we don’t know what they’re going to do.”
Dominant Statistical Performance This Season
The Lions’ 11-0 record comes with utterly dominant numbers. Unity has outscored opponents 533-60 across the entire season. That’s an average margin of victory approaching 50 points per game. Meanwhile, Lafayette Christian has won its last 10 games by an average margin of 40.3 points.

Youth Leadership Propels Lions Offense
One of the more remarkable aspects of Unity’s success is the offensive explosion despite losing a legendary quarterback. The team replaced three-time all-state signal caller Evan Whiteside with sophomore Miles Schwartz as first-year starter. The transition has been seamless—the Lions improved from 34.2 points per game last year to 48.5 this season.
“I’m not nervous because I know what the team and I can do,” Schwartz said. “I’m excited for the opportunity that we get to share.” Senior captains Davis Blankenship and Elliott Whiteside have been instrumental in preparing younger teammates. The six-man senior class will graduate having never missed a championship game in their four years. A win Saturday would give them another ring alongside their 2023 Class 2A 8-man championship.
What To Watch For Saturday
• Chemistry Adjustment: Lafayette Christian has won 10 straight to reach the final. The Cougars’ defensive adjustments could challenge Unity’s newly structured offense.
• Schwartz’s Poise: The sophomore quarterback must handle championship pressure. His composure will determine scoring efficiency.
• First-Half Execution: Unity typically dominates early. Starting strong sets the tone against a hungry Lafayette team.
• Red Zone Efficiency: Both squads excel at scoring inside the 20-yard line. Capitalizing on early drives matters most.
Can Unity Christian Keep Dynasty Alive?
The Rome-based Lions have built something special—an era of consistent excellence rare in high school football. Back-to-back four consecutive championship appearances speaks volumes about coaching, culture, and commitment. Coach David Humphreys summed it up perfectly: “To think that we would have the opportunity to play in this thing four years in a row is a testament to our kids, and the work they put in.”
Still, don’t count out Lafayette Christian. The Cougars may have lost the season opener, but that doesn’t tell the whole story. “They’re a very tough team. They’re a team that plays through the whistle,” said Humphreys. “They’re very well-coached.” A perfect season remains within reach for Unity Christian—but the road goes through Newnan Saturday.
