The goal is to funnel the drive, but coverage on rotation often has Chuck outside the paint... whereas Yao doesn't ever stray out... ask Carlos Boozer about that. While one season, much less a partial season, is not statistically as useful as a multi-year sample, I imagine that part of Shane's decrease in effectiveness is likely due to the change in approach of Shane's assignment on any given night. What Hayes adds in one-on-one matchups, he completely lacks as a helpside defender against a driving guard/forward. Shane's genius is shading players to the spots they don't want to be in, which is much harder without Yao. While Yao is not a traditional shot blocker, at 7'6", he certainly keeps people from attempting as many drives to the basket as we've seen this year.
