that's a great point and also has parallels to the t-mac situation. i don't think you can shy away from potential malcontents like carmelo just because of the memory of the mcgrady situation.

If Walsh lets past decisions cloud his future decisions, he might as well retire. All execs have to make decisions, and then live with the results for better or for worse. When self-doubt creeps in, it's time to worry about his future abilities to make the best decisions.

Would have been just way too huge a risk to enter June with that type of uncertainty.

I think Walsh completely misjudged the market. Look at the price to take on contracts in the offseason before the draft. Kirk Hinrich (which you could argue is much worse than Jeffries) was taken on only at a cost of the 17th pick in the draft. I'd say Jordan Hill alone is better than Seraphin, and the other draft considerations make it a far better deal for the Rockets than what the Wizards got. Then there's the OKC trade where the Thunder still had to give up 2 late first rounders to trade up along with taking on Mo Peterson. To put it simply, Walsh overpaid and misjudged the market. He could've done a lot better in the offseason but it would've been even more of a risk to go into June with Jeffries still on the books.

We tend to forget what Walsh was facing at the Trade Deadline last yr. Stern had warned that the Salary Cap was going to drop pretty significantly. Numbers of $52-54mil were being tossed around.
With Jeffries,Hill, the few left on contracts,Lee's cap hold and roster cap holds, the Knicks were looking at an assigned cap of some $41mil,nowhere close enough to sign even 1 max FA.(Esp since LeBron,Bosh,Wade,Johnson,Amare were eligible for $16-17mil starting salaries.)
With the predicted Cap numbers the Knicks would have had to renounce Lee's rights just to have enough to sign 1 max FA.
Walsh pretty much had to make the Rockets/Kings trade just to have a chance at signing someone.
Once the higher Cap was announced I'm sure he started cursing the Fates.

The real killer for the Knicks was Curry and his contract. If the Knicks could have found anyone willing to take that contract on,they'd have been in much better shape.
