I'm to the point, that I think Delfino should go. He's cheap and a decent player. But I feel he's taking minutes away from our PFs. If Mchale only played him backup SF behind Parsons, I wouldn't have an issue with him. But he's taking some PF minutes.

I think he shouldn't take any power forward minutes away from DMo and TRob.

He has played better than expected and and at 3m he's a bargain, but if we can (hopefully) get an upgrade via FA we might let Delfino go simply because we won't need him.

I like him as a backup SF at that price, but he's taking valuable minutes away from DMo and TRob and to a lesser extent Jones. I just think that our team would be better off in the long run and possibly next season if we give his minutes to other guys, since Delfino has peaked, imo.

I voted to trade him so our PFs can get more minutes, but if we signed a high-quality 4, I wouldn't mind having his three point shooting prowess around another year. Basically, if it looks like we're building around D-Mo and T-Rob, let's jettison Delfino while he has trade value in order to free minutes for our future. If we're set to challenge for the West next year, keep him around; sometimes you need an irrational confidence guy to come knock down threes, as the Rockets Faithful learned well during our two championship runs.

We all know the way Morey operate and he will not rest until the team is "set". Very very likely that he will be part of the trade package.

while delfino is on a good contract he is not part of the future of this team. he is too streaky for me. I know he has good numbers from 3pt land, but he will go 7 out of 10 one night and 2 out of 11 the next. we need a more balanced shooter and his role is to easily upgraded. we should either trade him or let him walk to free up more cap room. right now he is taking minutes away from players who are in the future of this team. that can not be allowed to continue. He was needed for some veteran leadership to this young team this year and did a decent job fulfilling his role. he can still be valuable, but not to us. after this year the minutes he recieves will only hold back more promising players. based on that....we should try to see what we can get for him. i'm sure after the year he is having this year against what he makes we shouldn't have to much trouble moving him for something solid.

I'd Like to upgrade him in FA or even see who is available in the draft.

I don't think he's taking minutes away from our young PFs. D-Mo has been limited by conditioning and foul trouble, not by his minutes allocation, and Thomas Robinson just isn't ready to play more than spot minutes yet. I'm sure McHale would much prefer to be playing Delfino at the 3 (where I think he's pretty solid as part of a three man wing rotation with Parsons and Harden), but he is forced to play him at PF out of necessity rather than anything else, IMO.

Give Motiejunas and Robinson a summer to work on their game, and they should be in a position where they can man the 4 spot full time and Delfino can go back to the position he's best at. In terms of a straight upgrade, I don't see any point in trading him unless we get someone back in trade who either [a] cheaper for similar production (unlikely) or [b] better than Parsons to the point that he becomes the starter at SF. There is no point in taking on extra salary in the backup SF position. If a deal comes along that helps bring in a star somewhere else on the roster, then obviously that's a different story.

Playing limited minutes has actually shown to help young talent develop faster according to some reports I have read (this is the reason Drummond isn't getting more time despite the fact the Pistons are alot better with him out there). The theory is that the players put more thought into what they can do to get more minutes.

I find those reports hard to believe. while it may work in some cases there is (IMO) nothing better for teaching a player than PT. humans are creatures of habit. the more we do something the better we get at doing it. delfino has reached his ceiling. this is as good as it gets. he is good for the small ball lineup every so often, but we need to focus on developing what we have at PF. delfino is to streaky to be our backup SF. he has had a good year. if it's one thing I have learned about morey is he likes to buy low and sell high. that would make delfino a prime trading chip. combined with something else.......say our 2nd round draft pick and another player we may be able to upgrade the wing position for reasonable money. that probably mean delfino is toast. so don't get attached to him. he is a decent player on a good contract that expires whenever the team chooses.......that looks real good to a team trying to shed money to avoid luxury tax. credit to morey he has assembled quite a few of these type contracts. I expect at some point in the next few months he will cash in the chips.

Yeah, it really does seem situational.  Some guys don't need that kind of motivation.  Other guys do.  Greg Smith said in that interview that not getting drafted opened his eyes a great deal and forced him to "grow up"--if he gets drafted in the first round like he thought he would maybe he ends up being a bust.  I would hope a coach is able to know which method a player needs and moves forward accordingly.

My ol' lady actually likes looking at him, which is why I voted "vital to the team", if she can find a reason to want to watch, then I can watch with more peace, so purely selfish vote there. Really though, I believe he adds the only modicum of veteran leadership we have on the floor. He's a good captain for the second unit, has a good price, and when he's on, he's really on. We can definitely chalk up a couple wins this season to him catching fire late, and we may make the playoffs by only those couple wins. I don't like him at the backup 4 though, but as a bench wing and veteran leader. But, if his contract was needed to trade for a player with a bigger upside, I wouldn't hesitate to get behind the trade, but wouldn't cut him just for the sake of it.
