I think we can all agree that Beverley's played well and with his more consistent 3 point shot and better defense, along with being trusted by the coach(which can be seen with the coach letting him close out the game), that Lin is expendable at this point. We would owe him 20 mil over 2 years after this year. My question is, who will take him and his salary? We won't get value back for him, since we're replacing him with a former 2nd round pick(in Beverley). Are we even going to be able to dump his salary? I like Lin and think he's got the potential to be an all-star in a few years, but he doesn't mesh well with Mchale, based on my (albeit limited) observations from watching the game. The question is, do we dump him just to dump him. Based on the quotes from people on this forum about Delfino, I think most of the forum would agree that getting rid of Lin for cap space would be ideal. Of course, this is contingent on Beverley staying consistent throughout the season and being able to continue to close out games. I think he goes either to the Lakers in a trade with LAL for Howard/Gasol or maybe the Nets in a package that gives us Humphries(expiring contract)+picks. What are your thoughts?

Where will Lin be next year?

I disagree strongly with this. Beverley has excellent value as a bench point guard because of his hustle and defensive peskiness, but he is not nearly the orchestrator in the half court that Lin is and is not a long term answer at the point. Jeremy has the edge in both the driving and passing departments, and generally has a better understanding of how to control the game. This was never more obvious than the possession late in the game in which Beverley dribbled the ball around for 24 seconds and then threw up a prayer. I love watching Beverley play and I think he's an incredibly valuable contributor to the team, but I wouldn't want him starting and I certainly wouldn't want to trade Lin away on the basis that we would replace him by inserting Beverley into the starting lineup.

I'd like him in Houston, but we don't need a point guard to play point guard. Our system is more of a triangle-esque type with no true point guard. Each wing player is a point guard and we just pass the ball until somebody gets an open shot. I agree that Lin is a better passer and driver, but those aren't skills that are emphasized in the system we run right now.

What team are you watching??? The Rocket's current model is based almost entirely on the drive-and-kick game, with Lin and Harden penetrating and then passing out to shooters. Driving and passing are EXACTLY the skills that the current offensive scheme requires of its point guard. The most important, by a country mile. There is no basis in reality to anything you just said.

Really? It's true that Harden and Lin drive and kick, but so does Parsons and now Delfino does it. Lin doesn't do a whole lot of driving recently. He does a few plays, but most of the time they set a pick and roll and he waits on the 3 point line for the pass. Beverley can do that as well. Harden is our de facto PG, with Parsons playing some as well. While driving and passing are important when Harden's out, when Harden's in, 3 point shooting and defense are more important.

How so? His salary is quite high and we're getting nearly the same production for a lot cheaper in Beverley.
His salary is $8.3M for salary cap purposes. That's what a starting PG makes. Beverly is playing well, but it was only like a week ago and he wasn't even in the rotation.

Bit kneejerk since it is a bit too early to tell. As ST said, I like Bev off the bench. I don't see him replacing Lin just like how I don't see Brooks replacing Bev in the rotation Not saying I think Lin is our long-term PG solution, but Bev is not the answer to that quandary.

there is only one thing that will stop lin from being houston's starting PG next season..................cp3
And all other statements aside.....this is the truest....and since that has a .1% chance of happening we're set at PG.
TTDN, I found myself wondering the same thing about Beverley...especially over the last 3 games or so....you watch him play and wonder why he isn't the starter...and then Lin comes back in and does something that makes you say, "wow". The difference, to me, is that Lin is a playmaker. It's true. He is a superior passer. He is better at driving and finishing or drawing contact. He is smart and even-keeled. I like Lin as our PG even if he never exceeds the level he is at now (which I think he will). If JLin ends up being our weakest player 2 years from now the Rockets will be feared by all.

Exactly. But Lin does fit better in this offense that CP3 would. Of course, if you have the fortune of having someone like him, you change your offense. Harden is our de facto PG because apart from having good passing skills, if a pass isn't available, he has the ability to draw fouls more consistently than Lin, like a "get out of jail free" card in case he looks trapped. I think Lin will be here next year, imagine what a full training camp with Lin and Harden together from the start....the only role Brooks could be playing in here right now is a spot-up shooter with very limited minutes, something like Daequan Cook back in OKC. Right now I'm very confortable with Beverley at the backup PG, his intensity would be unsustainable with starter minutes anyway, although knowing his role maybe he would play differently if he were going to start. But I also have to adknowledge that Beverley is a better fit when Harden is on the ball hogging distribution duties (great shooter compared to Lin).

Didn't you misunderstand my post the other day where you thought I meant "dump lin for nothing" and then said that was "idiotic?" Lol.
In regards to the topic, I do like how Beverly plays(and definitely believe we can do better than Lin) but there is no way we'd be better off with him as the starter. He's got great energy, but lacks the vision/floor management skills to dominate a game. I hope Lin can improve, because as has been discussed before there aren't many suitable replacements available. I do believe he's in Houston next year, too.

Which is why I think either Lin or Mchale is gone. I personally don't like Mchale(he's done okay this year), but you can't pay Lin that much and not utilize him. It's just throwing away money that can be used on guys that would fit into our system better.

Our offense is predicated on dribble-drive penetration resulting in either a strong finish at the hoop, a foul, or a kick-out pass to an open shooter. What makes our offense so frustrating for opposing teams is, after Harden, guys like Lin and Parsons can effectively perform the same execution which means the defense must work that much harder to not make a mistake.
One dribble drive and kick out is fine, but defenses can handle that. When the kickout goes to the weakside, after players have shifted and rotated to stop the inital "play", the player with the ball can shoot a semi-contested 3, but if they initiate a second dribble drive the entire defense is out of position and this results in an even better shot very often. The idea is to manipulate the defense such that offensive efficiency increases.
Having said all of that, I think Lin is a great choice for us at PG and swapping him for a "spot-up" shooter would be counter-intuitive and stop the flow of our offense--which is beginning to work more and more like the triangle (I forget who posted that comparison recently in a diff. thread). An offense like that requires players with more varied skill sets. It's another reason I want to give Josh Smith the 1 year test drive....he is tailor made for this.
