@  majik19 : (18 January 2016 - 03:06 AM) whelp, we just let the worst team in the league hit 75% from the field in the 1st quarter.
@  thenit : (14 January 2016 - 01:34 AM) Well he can't defend well either especially bigger 4s.
@  majik19 : (13 January 2016 - 04:24 PM) TJ's game last night is exactly why he drives us all so crazy on this blog. Short of passing ability, there really isn't a reason he can't do much of what Draymond Green does... he just doesn't do it consistently!
@  clydesmoustache : (13 January 2016 - 04:17 AM) Can someone hit Tjones in the eye before games?
@  Willk : (11 January 2016 - 02:41 AM) the SFs showed up tonight!
@  slick shoes : (10 January 2016 - 05:45 PM) Lionel Hollins is available yet again.....
@  majik19 : (08 January 2016 - 09:15 PM) We clearly "can" play better without Lawson in the lineup. As Rahat has argued many times, we cannot compete with Golden State, San Antonio, OKC, etc. without an integrated, motivated Lawson (and even then we probably can't compete anyway)
@  slick shoes : (08 January 2016 - 03:01 PM) In fact, the Rockets are 5-0 without Lawson in the line-up.
@  slick shoes : (08 January 2016 - 02:58 PM) Fun fact: The two games that Ty Lawson was suspended in December, the Rockets won. Since spraining his ankle, the Rockets are 2-0.
@  DenverRocket : (07 January 2016 - 09:33 PM) I did see the game. He didn't throw the ball, just feigned to do so - i think it was an understandable reaction and he was able to rein himself in just in time ;)
@  slick shoes : (07 January 2016 - 07:40 PM) DenverRocket, did you not see the game? I'm talking about his behavior while security was searching for the culprit.
@  DenverRocket : (07 January 2016 - 07:34 PM) I doubt he made a big issue about, just responded to a reporter/media question and ESPN gets a story. Come on, that knucklehead was totally out of order and deserves the ban - no big surprise that it happened in Utah either!
@  slick shoes : (07 January 2016 - 07:32 PM) They banned the fan for a year. It was really the "attempts" to throw the ball into the stands at him that irked me.
@  thenit : (07 January 2016 - 07:24 PM) Its the diva antics he has been displaying this past summer through now. His head is too big right now. I think they did the reight thing removing the fan and thats should be it
@  slick shoes : (07 January 2016 - 06:11 PM) Is it just me or is how upset Harden is over that laser pointer incident completely blowing it out of proportion.?
@  slick shoes : (06 January 2016 - 08:50 PM) I hope to see much more of Harrell tonight. Def not the starter but he added some fuel off the bench on Monday.
@  thenit : (05 January 2016 - 04:22 AM) thank god TJ is not playing in the 2nd half. Such a difference
@  thenit : (03 January 2016 - 06:57 AM) You cant rule out dmo yet. Still not recovered, he was out tonight due to sore back so the back is still an issue. TJ - I have seen enough 2 playoffs and 3 reg seasons
@  Johnny Rocket : (03 January 2016 - 04:01 AM) It turns out that in the big DMO vs. T Jones debate, there was only one right answer: neither.
@  thenit : (03 January 2016 - 03:29 AM) So once again TJones can't defend a good PF, minus 35 after 3 Qs, and Harden not much better with -31. Two of the worst defenders I've seen in a long time ATM

New post: Los Angeles Clippers 140, Houston Rockets 132: Better than it looked
    By: Forrest Walker

The Houston Rockets won their first two tilts against the Los Angeles Clippers, but lost the third time in overtime on the second night of a road back to back. The game wasn't pretty, and it wasn't a win, but ultimately it wasn't bad.  There was a lot to hate about a game that the Rockets will probably kick themselves for giving away, but in the end it was probably a better sign for the team than their win the previous night.

Before we move on, let's address this; Dwight Howard went out there and conquered. He always gets up for Los Angeles because Los Angeles always gets up for him. He was like John Henry, toiling until his heart exploded in vain against a machine that never misses. Is 36 points on 11-16 shooting good? That seems good. He grabbed how many rebounds? 26? 10 of them on offense? 4 assists and 14-18 on free throws? All of this is nuclear fusion level performance, and just what the Rockets need. He's changing shots on defense and finishing hard at the rim on offense. This may have been his most "Superman" game of his Rockets career.

Despite all of that, however, the Rockets were down big late in the game. In the third, the game threatened to widen into a full-on blowout. Houston had to pull out a 42-28 fourth quarter to tie the game, and much of that comeback came at the end of the game on a miracle run keyed by Marcus Thornton and some logic-defying three point shots. The Rockets as a group missed approximately seven hundred wide open looks in the first half, which isn't surprising given that they just spent two consecutive days playing basketball in Los Angeles.

James Harden and Terrence Jones in particular looked gassed, missing free throw after free throw and shot after shot off the front of the rim. Jones played his way out of the game, partially by tipping the ball into Houston's own basket in a game which went to overtime. Harden hit a mere 5-12 from the field and missed 5 of his 13 free throws, something which again might have helped in an overtime loss.

Speaking of free throws, the Rockets took 52. They hit 33. Not to beat a dead horse, but... overtime loss. 19 misses at the charity stripe. The Clippers took a "mere" 33 free throws, but this was mostly because they weren't attacking at all. Instead, they were just hitting every three pointer to build their double-digit lead. They ended up 22-37 from behind the arc, and this was after they cooled off significantly from the first quarter, in which they hit 7 of 10 tries. JJ Redick was their hero, hitting 9 threes and scoring 40 for the team. Perhaps the team needed to guard him better (the team definitely needed to guard him better), or perhaps the Clippers simply has an amazing shooting night. Either way, the game went to them.

However, this is a loss the Rockets can take some pride in. They turned it on and powered through a game which would have been easy to give up on. They survived so many bad misses and so many bad plays on the way to a thrilling overtime conclusion. They made a Clippers team that just won 10 in a row play above their heads to beat them, and the Rockets couldn't shoot due to exhaustion. The Rockets aren't a contender right now, but they don't look too far removed from that sub-contender pack on nights they take seriously. Only the Golden State Warriors and San Antonio Spurs have a realistic shot to win a title, but the Rockets could at least make a little noise if they can build on gritty games like this.

This loss wasn't what the Rockets wanted, and Patrick Beverley aggravated his ankle in the process. There's a lot to recriminate about after this game. But even so, there was a lot to like for a team that needs to find anything to take justified pride in. There are bad wins and good losses, and it's very possible the Rockets just had one of each in the span of two days.

As I said elsewhere, I only have time to watch one quarter of each Rockets game these days, and I've decided to focus on the 2nd quarter to see if I can get to the root of the problems besetting the team. I watched the second quarter this morning and I thought it was the best the team has looked for a while. The second unit came out with energy - Brewer in particular was everywhere, getting his hands in the passing lanes and disrupting plays. Thornton and Dwight continue to play well together - the snug pick-and-roll play where Thornton takes a handoff from Dwight, who then rolls for the lob seems to work every time. The only thing that wasn't working was their ability to cover Wes Johnson in the corner - he was playing the 4 spot in a smallball lineup and the Rockets just didn't get out to him quickly enough to close him down.

When the starters came back things dropped off on the defensive end. Last year I wrote an article about how the Rockets defended the Chris Paul/DeAndre Jordan pick-and-roll. They had several different approaches and tried a few different looks. But there were precious few of the defensive adaptations from last season on show here - just weak shows from the big-man defender and Jordan rolling to the hoop uncontested for dunk after dunk.

Despite there being some defensive issues, for once the Rockets did actually win the second quarter! There was a world of difference between this game and the one against the Cavaliers, and most of that change was from the bench. When they're actually capable of being a net positive, it transforms this team from the abject failures of Friday night into the competitive playoff team of Monday.

All I have to say - games like this is why Dwight Howard will remain on this team for quite some time. There is only one other player in the league that can have a game like that right now (Anthony Davis). You could talk me into Andre Drummond or Deandre Jordan, but to me, it's Howard and Davis.

Marcus Thornton comes up big at times but his passing skills are terrible. I do realize that he was not here to be a facilitator, but I think our 2nd unit would be more effective if we ty Lawson completely take the steering wheel. There multiple possessions early in the game that were wasted by thortons inability to make the lob pass. His
