AllStars CHECK.
Destiny? To Be Determined.
In an 82 game season, a few landmarks for self-assessment should be welcome by any team with lofty aspirations. I like midpoint/halfway and 20 games in (the ALLSTAR break works too due to the "break from games").
The Rockets have played just 14 games. 9-5 is good. But the Rockets should be 11-3. That would be good for 3rd place in the West. And 3rd place is a reasonable expectation for the Rockets in their first season with Dwight Howard.
The 5 losses consist of 3 losses versus Los Angeles teams and then 4th quarter collapses versus Philadelphia and Dallas. All very winnable games besides the 1st loss, a blowout loss against the Clippers. At 11-3 or 12-2, the Rockets would-have-been ahead of schedule in fulfilling their destiny. But can a team as young as the Rockets be expected to be elite already? Can/should a newer team be expected to be consistent, to have a defensive identity, to be efficient in crunch time? Or is 9-5 a more accurate reflection of "where" the Rockets are right now.
This team will mature. They will be better in February/March than they are today. In this process, the Rockets will have to acquire a wing defensive stopper, fix the Omer Asik issue and improve their propensity to turn the ball over.
What is the Rockets destiny?
A 2nd round exit in the 2014 playoffs.
A western conference finals appearance in the 2015 playoffs.
The 2016 NBA CHAMPIONS.
