As most of you know we recently had to address the issue of racism here on Red94. I would like to take a moment to address a few things in that regard.
First, thank you for bringing it to our attention as quickly as possible. As moderators, we try to stay on top of what happens here as best we can, but there will always be gaps so it helps when people use the report post option to alert us that the site needs our attention.
Red94 has and always will strive for a higher standard--in all regards. This includes, but is not limited to, well-thought out posts about basketball, being respectful of each others' opinions, and being respectful of each others' humanity.
It is this last point which I would like to focus on now. Due to the recent comments about Jeremy Lin a one week ban is being issued (unsure if it has gone into effect yet as we hit a software snag--but very soon). We have communicated via private message and expect that this will not be a problem moving forward.
I am also counting on each of you to ensure that this issue is put to rest. I have already begun to see the backlash from this towards the offending member and I will say right now this WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. There will be no hive-mind destruction of this man's character. I implore each of you to individually take stock of what was said, decide for yourself if you want to forgive one man's mistake or if he should forever bear that scarlet mark in your mind. Whichever you choose, keep it personal and keep it off of these boards. We have a block feature that can be accessed multiple ways which can be used. If you feel that you cannot continue to interact with this member please use it.
On a personal note, I would like to say that I am for forgiving this member. I do not think he is a racist; rather, I think he is a man that made a joke in very poor taste. To cast blanket statements around that insinuate as much reflects more strongly on the accuser than the accused. It is hate-mongering (which is what we are trying to avoid, right?) and should not be tolerated. We are all adults that can think and decide for ourselves how to react to this. Again, this is not an opportunity to gang up on anyone and I will be watching to ensure this does not occur. A racist statement was made--let's not make that into more than it is.
If anyone has questions or would like to address this further with me, or anyone else, please use the PM (private message) function. Thanks for reading.
