WHO IS JORDAN HENRIQUEZ

He's very raw despite being a 3 year guy, he played a decent amount in Orlando Summer League a couple weeks ago, not particularly impressive.
In all likelihood, he's a training camp filler. there in case someone gets hurt, and then will play the season on the Vipers.

He's going straight to the d-league with Cannan, Young, and covington. If he proves something down there this season then great, its always great to have rare assets like athletic 7fts. If not then doesn't hurt us considering we are only paying him a few hundred grande.

No real guarantee he plays in RGV. He's a camp body with a summer "make good" contract that wont be kept. I think he's the 16th player we've signed/agreed to sign and we need to trim down to 15 by the start of the season... Where he goes after that is in the air. I think he'd go to the D-league draft or sign elsewhere.

We can retain the rights to him and send him down to the Vipers.

You're right, if he agrees to sign a standard D-League contract which he probably would.
incorrect........once we cut him even if he signs a standard contract with the vipers he can be called up by any NBA team. we don't retain any rights to him. however I do agree he is just a training camp body unless he shows us something worth keeping. the only way we retain rights to someone in the D-league is that player is still on the 15 man roster

there's actually a change in the rules this year which would let us retain his rights IIRC
This is correct. I brought up on the Vipers thread.

Of course we can call him back up IF he signs with RGV after we cut him. If he declines to sign with RGV then we have no rights to him since we did not draft him.
And yes, my first post was incorrect assuming we had no rights if cut, which I admitted when I quoted Buckko saying he was correct, we have his rights IF he signs with RGV per the NBA Camp Allocations rule quoted below.
NBA Camp Allocations: In accordance with the NBA, the NBA Development League will implement a rule change with regard to how D-League rosters are assembled. Beginning this season, up to three players cut from the roster of an NBA team before the D-League Draft will be allocated to that team's D-League affiliate provided they sign the standard D-League contract.
This rule replaces the previous allocation rule, where players of local significance would be allocated to D-League teams, a rule that was designed to help with marketing but didn't increase the team's bond with the NBA like the new allocation system.

Possibly I'm reading too much into the part "provided they sign the standard D-League contract."
My thoughts being that, in the unlikely scenario, if he got an offer from another NBA team after we cut him and he doesn't want to sign with the D-League.
I'm not trying to prove anyone wrong or argue, I just want to fully understand the possibilities of this.

I doubt Morey would have offered Young and Henriquez contracts unless he believed they would sign that D-League contract, but my understanding of the CBA is limited. I usually consult David Weiner aka @bimathug via twitter when I have CBA related questions.

True and the scenario I'm wondering about is pretty unlikely anyways.
From what I've read in Larry Coon's CBA FAQ and a D-League FAQ it really doesn't address the specific issue but it does stress that players with 0-2 years experience can be assigned to the D-League by their NBA team. Maybe this works in conjunction with allocation rule meaning that if you sign with a team and you have limited experience, if they cut you then they retain your rights and you go to their D-league affiliate. I also didn't know that Henriquez got a small guarantee like BJ Young, it's possible that has something to do with retaining the rights as opposed to just a fully non guaranteed deal. I figured there had to be some reason Morey gave up a piece (however small) of the cap.

I have seen nothing that would indicate that a team can retain a players rights while he is in the d-league if he is not on the 15 man nba roster. if a player is in the d-league and not part of the 15man nba roster he can be called up by any team in the league. I have seen the rule change that allows and nba team to assign 3 players now instead of the two previous allowed, but I haven't seen anything changing the rules to allow nba teams to control the rights to players playing in the d-league who are not part of the 15 man roster

The new rule quoted above and mentioned in the Vipers thread specifically addresses players that were cut from the NBA team's roster, not playing there while on Inactive Reserve.
