@  BenQueens : (15 May 2013 - 03:38 AM) Is SAS-GS Game 5 an object lesson in the danger of relying on jumpshots?
@  bboley24 : (10 May 2013 - 02:18 PM) MDK
@  RollingWave : (09 May 2013 - 10:01 AM) The west is such a brutal conference though, I mean if the Heat was in the West, it's probably at least a 30% chance they don't make it to the finals either. almost everything is good enough that if enough things lineup right for a brief stretch your done.
@  2016Champions : (09 May 2013 - 04:35 AM) I've been saying ppl need to stop sleeping on the Spurs, but if they lose this series I'm going into deep slumber on them. Like Demolition Man cryonically frozen slumber.
@  blakecouey : (09 May 2013 - 03:31 AM) Well Hack-A-Bogut is going to get the Spurs back into this game.  They should've been put away, big shots falling again tonight.
@  blakecouey : (09 May 2013 - 02:55 AM) I don't know if he realizes it, but they're the same age whether they win or lose.
@  blakecouey : (09 May 2013 - 02:55 AM) "If/when these guys win tonight we cant no longer call these guys young" - Shaq on The Warriors.
@  pharmag : (07 May 2013 - 10:17 PM) @2016, that is too true!  Of course it helps that South Beach, LA, and NYC teams have their cap room tied up for forseeable future (barring a D12 or CP3 bailing)
@  2016Champions : (07 May 2013 - 02:59 PM) I feel like we're becoming one of the most desired destinations now too, our organization is moving on up!
@  feelingsuper... : (07 May 2013 - 01:09 PM) That is a good sign when other organizations cherry pick your staff. I think the culture and system that the Rockets have put in place and begun to develop in the end will be far more important than any coach.
@  blakecouey : (07 May 2013 - 03:10 AM) Going to miss Sampson.  Everything Ive heard/read/seen say hes a great coach.
@  RollingWave : (07 May 2013 - 02:54 AM) Our D, at least in half court, was very sound, the transition part though... eeek.
@  2016Champions : (07 May 2013 - 02:50 AM) Sampson was the mastermind behind our underrated defense.
@  Richards : (07 May 2013 - 02:30 AM) We all knew Morey put together the team and McHale/Sampson coached the players. Sampson was a mastermind behind coaching.
@  feelingsuper... : (07 May 2013 - 02:08 AM) You got a right to your opinion but seems like Morey is the brains to me, thought that was obvious with the offensive scheme and all that. Rockets coaching is about leadership at this point which McHale possesses in spades.
@  Richards : (07 May 2013 - 02:04 AM) Well, by reading what players said throughout the season, Sampson seems to be the brain behind Rockets basketball.
@  feelingsuper... : (07 May 2013 - 01:52 AM) Of course he stays, what do you mean by that question? It is a strange question since what assistants do would never effect a head coach that way.
@  Richards : (07 May 2013 - 12:51 AM) Will McHale stay if Sampson got coaching job at another team?
@  RollingWave : (05 May 2013 - 09:37 AM) Irving still need to work on a few things (most notably defense), his performance considering his age is great.
@  Dan G : (04 May 2013 - 06:50 AM) Damn..who knew tonight was gonna be close out the series night? Four Games 6s and four closeouts.

So every year NBA.com does the Drive to the Finals game for the playoffs, and every year I enter it only to realise that I have no-one to measure myself against. But this year I am sorting things out in advance! Once the game becomes available, who's up for playing?

If you don't know what it is, the game asks you to select one player for each night of the playoffs. You score their Points+Assists+Rebounds total from that game, with the catch that once you've used them once you can't use them again. There's some interesting strategy involved (eg. should I pick this player given that his team might be eliminated this round, or save him in case they advance?), and because it's cumulative scoring you can easily measure your scores against everyone else.

Who's with me?

Ill try it.  I usually don't do too well with games that have to be changed every single night(usually I forget a day or two...or more), but I'm definitely up for it.

im signing up now .... just an FYI for anyone who might not figure it out.  when you click the link above, it adds a period to the end of the URL which in turn makes it appear broken.  at least thats what it did for me.

Now that the playoff brackets are set you can now start making your selections! Interesting slates of games to start things off...

Kind of conflicted - I picked David Lee tonight, and he had a decent (if not spectacular) game going before going down injured. Is it a good thing that I've managed to get some production out of him if he's going to be out for the rest of the series, or is it a bad thing that I wasn't able to pick someone who was on the court the whole game?

I figured some kind of approach in which you take advantage of the most favourable situation. For example, I prefered picking Lee when they played in GS, assuming he would perform better at the Oracle Arena....if the numbers were good, I guess it was good for you to pick a player that isn't gonna play anymore (also assuming Denver gets the series)

Hmm, well looking at who everyone else picked I'd say it has come out pretty well. Curry had a poor game for GS (he was someone I thought would do better in Game 3/4), and Lee almost matched his production. I figured Lee would get his numbers wherever they played - you can't lead the league in double doubles if you're performing poorly away from home, after all!

The issue with waiting until Game 3/4 to pick the good players is that, especially in the first round, there are too many good players for you to pick them all if you wait. There are going to be 8 teams eliminated in round 1, and they're going to play their games 3 and 4 over a ~4 day stretch...someone's going to miss out.

I had Lee locked in for Game 2, had to change that now though.  I had taken Curry last night, and although he didn't have a monster game, his production was good enough that Im satisfied with having used him.

My strategy so far was to mainly pick players on the teams that I don't think will win the series, so that I have the ones moving on left when they move to the next round.  I don't want to use Lebron now when it's basically a lock that the Heat make the finals, same with Wade.

Ditto. I think is the smartest thing to do
