The Hornets just had a fire sell. They traded Emeka Okafor and Trevor Ariza for Rashard Lewis and the 46th pick. You would think Okafor and Ariza were worth more, but obviously managemtent was trying to create enough cap room to resign Gordon, and also begin a new youth movement by drafting Davis, a pg, and another big (probably Zeller).

Okafors contract is pretty bad which really hurts his value even ariza is a little overpaid.

From the Wizard's point of view, this creates a bit of a logjam at the SF position (Ariza, Vesely, Singleton). Makes me think they'll be looking to draft Beal with the #3 pick rather than MKG, since he's more of an SG. Unless they decide to make further trades, I suppose.

I have no idea what the hell the Hornets were thinking with that trade. They manage to unload Arenas' contract for Lewis' huge but shorter contract, but then turn around now and trade Lewis for new longer contracts.
I guess they want to "win now" since they have enough young talent with Wall and the incoming #3, which is fine in theory, but I don't know if taking on more crap contracts is the way to go.

Interestingly that makes Nene expendable. He didn't play well last year and his contract isn't good but is that someone we are going to be chasing if the trade we all want to go through does not happen?

The Hornets basically traded Okafor and Trevor Ariza for a 46th pick , because the hornets plan to release Rashard Lewis by July 1st . The whole reason and point of the trade for the Hornets , as Red Stewie stated , was to have cap room to match any offer Eric Gordon has thrown at him . However , i dont see how this trade benefits the Wizards and i dont know why they did this trade . I'll tell you what though .. this years draft is going to be extremely fascinating as to regarding all the trades and interesting selections that will be taking place . I Cant Wait

Great trade by the Hornets. Also maybe Rashard Lewis will have a contract that makes him a better value instead of his current one. I don't understand the Wizards reasoning though, there are better players with better contracts than Ariza and Okafor, even though dropping Lewis' contract helps, its not a trade that will go putting them in contention, even if they get Beal they've got work to do. Everyone hoping for Eric Gordon needs to start thinking other thoughts, he's as good as signed to NO.

Yes , we defitnetly need to start looking somewhere else regarding an upgrade for sg now that Gordon looks like he is staying put . This would probably be the riskiest move the rockets would ever make , but i have an idea . How about Brandon Roy ? As reported , he is making a come back to the nba and we all know how good he is and we all know he would certainly help our team ( if healthy ) . Should we give him a chance ?

Gradewise, I give the Wizards an A for this trade, i don't know what the naysayers are talking about.
You get a double-double defensive minded center to pair alongside Nene in his prime, and a lock down perimeter defender who can knock down the occasional open 3pt shot and is a highlight dunk reel machine all for the 46th pick and Lewis's contract.
Sure, you might say they should have saved the cap room. Save it for what? They obviously thought they didn't hve a shot at the big name free agents, and this haul was better than over-paying midlevel talent which is what all teams with cap space do once they miss out on the marquee free agents. Also, they would have had to pay about 14 million to buy out Lewis, which they wont have to worry about anymore.
Finally, I heard this was mostly done to placate John Wall who is tired of losing, because they believe this lineup can make the playoffs
The Hornets on the other side? I dunno. I think they could have definitely got more for Okafor.
But who knows? I doubt they are trying to to win next season. Probably tank next season, get another lottery pick. Upgrade and then come back in full force 2 seasons from now if the mayan prophecy doesn't hit before then

For Washington,a great column by Sam Zeller.
Washington realized with the new CBA freezing the ground rules for two years before the new harsh Lux Tax kicks in means small-market teams-esp bad ones-won't benefit from the theoretical spreading of top players the new CBA is supposed to do for at least a couple of years..
If they continue to be a bad team, amassing top picks, they will have wasted John Wall's entire rookie contract on bad teams that do plenty of losing.
By adding Okafor and Ariza, solid professional players, they will win enough to prevent a culture of losing digging deep, keep the fan base excited, and develop their existing young players. Then in two yrs they will have a core of young players,Cap room and a solid handle on what they need to compete.
