@  majik19 : (13 October 2015 - 09:09 PM) Apparently we claimed Arsalan Kazemi off waivers from the Hawks today... yet another undersized (6'7") power forward for Morey's cupboard.
@  Mario Peña : (10 October 2015 - 01:12 PM) If your part if the Red94 Fantasy Basketball League check the thread to vote for the date and time for the draft event. Thanks y'all!
@  jorgeaam : (07 October 2015 - 08:47 PM) Guys we need 1 more owner for the Red94 fantasy league, if interested please comment on the post in the fantasy basketball thread
@  slick shoes : (07 October 2015 - 06:50 PM) Kobe ranked one spot higher than Ariza? Is this based on legacy or...??
@  slick shoes : (07 October 2015 - 04:13 PM) It was hard to keep up with both the Astros and Rockets at the same time. Should be interesting on Thursday with the Texans and Astros on simultaneously.
@  Mario Peña : (07 October 2015 - 04:09 PM) It was fun to have the Rockets on last night! Right now I'm watching the Celtics versus Milan and Alessandro Gentile is impressive.
@  jorgeaam : (06 October 2015 - 07:47 PM) Well, thinking twice about it, I'd rather have him score less and have the team as a whole do better. Lawson should take a lot of his load off
@  jorgeaam : (06 October 2015 - 07:47 PM) Loving that, hope he hits 30 PPG this year
@  thejohnnygold : (06 October 2015 - 06:15 PM) Someone is feeling confident :) : LINK
@  jorgeaam : (06 October 2015 - 05:54 PM) 10 Teams done, will need 2 more
@  Mario Peña : (06 October 2015 - 02:35 PM) Alright guys, if anyone is interested in joining the Red94 fantasy basketball league we could use one more player to get us to 10 teams (or three to get us to 12 teams). Just check the thread in the Fantasy Basketball forum. Thanks!
@  thejohnnygold : (05 October 2015 - 06:23 PM) I use leaguepass here in Austin with no problems...
@  skip 2 my lou : (05 October 2015 - 03:14 PM) Hey fellas, I'm a rocket fan but I live in the heart of Dallas. Does anybody know if I buy NBA Leaguepass if it's too close to be subject to blackouts?
@  Losthief : (02 October 2015 - 02:24 AM) tks jg
@  thejohnnygold : (29 September 2015 - 05:16 AM) FYI, it was media day today. Interviews are up at NBA.com
@  slick shoes : (23 September 2015 - 06:37 PM) kind of late in the day but NBATV is broadcasting classis Rockets games all day today.
@  SadLakerFan : (16 September 2015 - 04:37 AM) Man, as a Laker fan, I'm learning how little you care about the off season when your team sucks. Anyway, a quick moment to remember Moses. Still remember watching the 81 team as a kid - losing record, NBA Finals. I would have cried w/joy if they could have beaten the Celtics.

@  thejohnnygold : (14 September 2015 - 04:36 PM) A good article from Blinebury talking about when Hakeem and Moses used to play in the park. LINK

New post: A look at the Houston Rockets' schedule for the week of February 8 through February 14
    By: Rahat Huq

This is a huge week for the Houston Rockets as they square off first, tonight, against the power forward who tortured them in the playoffs last season, and then on Wednesday, against a Clipper team that has tortured them since acquiring Chris Paul.  When Terrence Jones proved he had no business even sharing the court last summer with LaMarcus Aldridge, many wondered why head coach Kevin McHale didn't at least give Donatas Motiejunas a small shot.  Omer Asik, while drastically limiting Aldridge's production, couldn't play every minute and also didn't need to be accounted for on the other end.  Motiejunas, while not what he is now, had taken major strides during the year towards defensive maturity, as noticed by those of us who were paying attention.

The Houston Chronicle had a nice piece today on D-Mo's eagerness for the shot he never got the first time around, heading into tonight's matchup.

    Quote:

There is, however, something else Motiejunas can bring, an option that Asik could not. Motiejunas can make Aldridge work on the other end. Since the start of January, Motiejunas has averaged 14 points in 29.6 minutes per game, making 56.4 percent of his shots. He has become the Rockets top low-post option, increasingly effective in screen-and-roll and on the break.

Tonight's game will be just the latest test as to whether Motiejunas has truly taken the next step in solidifying himself as this team's long-term answer at the power forward position.  Without consistent production on both ends of the floor from that spot, Houston simply does not have a chance at the championship, especially given Dwight Howard's limitations.  Houston doesn't lose to Portland last year if they get even anything from Terrence Jones.

    Screenshot 2015-02-08 11.01.20

When I was preparing for this post, I wasn't planning on posting the standings as I usually do, because--as I've been saying--does it really even matter?  But this deserves appreciation.  Look at that graphic above.  Do you realize that Houston is sitting completely alone, by a margin of two losses, in third, without their second best player, in maybe the most brutal conference in NBA history?  Do you realize this?  I don't think people completely realize this, otherwise I wouldn't be seeing so much chatter about the MVP candidacy of anyone not wearing an untamed beard.  This is just remarkable, if you think about it.  Most outlets had Houston finishing in the bottom rung of the playoff picture at the beginning of the season, and this wasn't even factoring in Dwight Howard's injury problems.

Look, I get it.  The Rockets are close to 8th also, bunched together with many other teams.  If you're a general NBA fan/blogger, you don't need to point out the obvious in some attempt to pour water on my enthusiasm.  This summer was a complete rollercoaster, as has been the last era.  From losing McGrady and then Yao, starting over, and then losing half of our entire nucleus in July in the failed Chris Bosh pursuit, forgive me for showing a little excitement about the overachievement of my team.

I'm with you; before the season I was thinking we'd be in the 6/7 seed range. And without Dwight? Try fighting for the 8th...

Griffin being out through at least the break, and perhaps through our second LAC meeting, is pretty big news, and it'll probably make the fight for the 8th seed even more entertaining. So we can be super glad our record is what it is currently... I can't imagine joining that 8th seed dogfight with Dwight out for a month...

Hahaha I can remember all those pre-season predictions about Rockets dropping to a 6-8th seed. I didn't think we'd go down that much, but 3rd place under the current circumstances is definitely HUGE.

I've missed the last couple of game threads, but this post works just as well.

Tonight, we've got Phoenix on the docket (7pm tip-off).  Dragic-Lovers rejoice!  In another case of "the grass is always greener...", I was snooping around one of Phoenix's fan sites and they are somewhat mixed on Dragic's future.  Many have tired of his services and want no part of signing him to a larger contract.  They seem to think he lacks some intangibles, is about to turn 29, and won't be worth the contract he is allegedly seeking.  That is all certainly debatable.

What's not debatable is how many tough losses Phoenix has suffered this season.  I'm not sure of the total, but this video sums up part of their struggle this season. LINK.  That includes an 0-4 in overtime games and 2-9 in games decided by 3 points or less.  The point is two-fold.  One, Phoenix is better than their 29-24 record indicates (which is still decent considering they play in the West).  Two, they need to get better.

Much like the Rockets of the '11-'12 season, luck can be blamed, but the reality is if the team keeps putting themselves into those situations they can only blame themselves.

Tonight will present some challenges.  Len/Plumlee/Wright present another size disparity that Houston can't match at the moment.  If we can't rebound and they get hot from deep we are in big trouble.

It is interesting that Capella and Johnson got called up.  It could be nothing, or it could be a live audition for the prospects we intend to include in a Dragic trade.  :o  Athletically, both players are elite elite elite.  Part of me hopes we don't trade either one as I believe each will grow into solid players.

With both teams coming off losses I expect a solid effort from both sides tonight.  Phoenix got a reprieve in one regard with Anthony Davis getting injured, but on the other side of that is OKC starting to hit on all cylinders.  They are only a game and a half back with 30 games remaining (29 for Phoenix).  I just don't see how Phoenix can realistically hold them off for that 8th seed.  (might as well trade us Dragic for some prospects, right.....?)

Not me. We're in a b2b, harden played too many minutes last night, and we've lost so many games against them in recent history. I hope I'm wrong, because this one is really important.

I think the Clips are pretty bad right now, they lost their main guy for offense (23 points and 5 assists!!), they did beat the Mavs however, but that was because the Mavs interior defense was weaker than the Sixers offense. My guess is Rockets win this one easily.

With Griffin out, I think we'll have it. If D-Mo hadn't gotten into foul trouble, I think last night would have been a lot better for the Rockets as a whole, and I don't expect him to get into that degree of trouble twice in a row. He's gotten a lot better about foul trouble recently. I think last night was just a bit of old habits' rearing their heads and maybe a bit of an effort on the Suns part to help him succumb to those habits. He'll learn from that and do a much better job tonight.

They have had our number for the last 10 games, so I am skeptical, but I actually feel good about this one. The main thing I am worried about is Harden's health/fatigue after last night, but he's a tank, so hopefully that won't be an issue. Also D-Mo should be well rested and ready to go for this one after a disappointing game last night. I'll say Rockets 103-97.

Unless Hawes or Crawford completely go off tonight I think we get the win.  We defend the three pretty well and without Griffin they need that more than ever.  Here's to our first win against them since March 30th, 2013.  B)

Harden's been playing 40+ minutes in his last 3 games and 36+ in his last 5. I'm seriously concerned about his health. And with DeAndre Jordan on D-Mo, I'm not sure we have that much of an advantage in that matchup. Hopefully D-Mo can force Jordan to defend outside the paint by burying 1-2 threes. Our other PFs should have their way with the likes of Hawes and Turkoglu, but TJ is out with the flu I think, and that leaves Smith as the only other offensive option, unless you count Papa, who doesn't really play inside the paint. This will still be a hard game IMO.
