So Rahat has been talking a lot about Parson's worth in dollars and generally coming up with a value for when his contract expires and we actually have to pay this guy. Malcolm Gladwell has an article that gives a bit of a historical perspective on how this "paying players their market value" idea came about.

I think he did a great job showing how we got here. But he doesn't mention the new movement in management that the statistical revolution is leading. The idea that management can replace all but truly superstar production. At least in sports we are seeing the middle class talent being squeezed monetarily.
Obviously the salary cap and limited roster spots on an NBA team change the parameters a little. But while we fret about exactly how many millions Parsons will get its kinda cool to remember where all this started.
