New adjusted +/- numbers from HoopNumbers

2010 March 2
by durvasa

HoopNumbers has recently updated its adjusted +/- statistics for the current season (for games up to February 25th).  Details on their method, called Regularized Adjusted +/- or RAPM, as well as links to statistics for each of the past 4 seasons, can be found on the site’s commentary page. The numbers they provide are interesting because  they use a special technique to significantly reduce standard errors and they provide adjusted +/- for both the offensive and defensive end. In this post, we’ll take a look at some of their results for the entire league, and also specific to the Rockets this season.

Thoughts on Raptors – Rockets

2010 March 2
by rahat huq

So I was very upset last night.  I had merely assumed Chris Bosh would be in uniform, looking forward to building upon my very superficial earlier assessment of his abilities.  Of course that was not the case as he has been out with injury.  I will just need to catch a Raptors game on League Pass upon his return.

Thoughts on Jazz – Rockets

2010 February 27

  • Kevin Martin is Craig Biggio.  Like the “king of hit batsmen,” Martin doesn’t just patiently draw walks – he forces his way on base by subtly putting his body in harm’s way.  Kevin made 12 free throws tonight en route to a 32 point explosion.  He hit jumpers from every angle but what impressed me the most is a surprisingly deft ability to create for himself off the dribble.  Now to clarify, he can’t do much in the way of creating for others, but given some of the scouting reports I had previously read, his handle has impressed me.  Most notable has been a spin move where Martin takes one dribble to his left and then spins back to his right for the jumpshot.  It’s intriguing because most players use this dribble spin to set up a drive to the basket.  I really can’t recall an instance of seeing it featured for the purpose of setting up a fadeaway jumper.

Howard vs. Yao

2010 February 25
by rahat huq

Dwight Howard destroyed the Rockets last night, scoring 30 points on 11 of 11 shooting from the floor and grabbing 16 boards.

It felt very odd seeing Howard dominate the team as I had become accustomed to the complete opposite in recent years.

On McGrady – Part 5

2010 February 23
by rahat huq

In six seasons with the Houston Rockets, Tracy McGrady averaged 19.2ppg. In his four healthy years with the team, he put up 24.1ppg, peaking out at 25.7ppg in 2004-2005.

McGrady is unfulfillment personified, the most uniquely gifted player this league has ever seen, but likely to be remembered as the biggest “loser” in its history.

  • Two things stood out regarding Kevin Martin:
  1. When he dribbles, he looks somewhat like a duck.  It was humorous to watch him waddle down the court while bringing the ball up.
  2. I held my breath every time he drew contact.  He had less meat on his arms than most of the women in the stands.
