Welcome, Ye Tao; First Red94 Chinese Editorialist

English

I’m very excited to introduce Ye Tao.  As the newest voice of the Red94 team, Ye will be writing editorial content in Chinese on the Red94-Chinese page.

In addition, Ye has coordinated an effort between Red94 and Hoopchina to address the latter’s goal of providing prompt, first-hand information to the Chinese audience.  Under Ye’s supervision, Hoopchina will translate all Red94 works for posting upon both sites.  Ye will also guide interaction between myself and Chinese readers through an arrangement with Hoopchina where I will address responses from their boards directly on the Red94-Chinese page.

A little about our newest contributor:

“I was pretty much born as a boring math guy. When every child was running around in the playground, I started to entertain myself at home with all kinds of math-related books. After moving to Canada in the mid-90s, I won a number of national competitions and was invited to the Math and Physics International Olympiad team training camp. After graduating from the University of Waterloo in 2004, I worked in Toronto for a few years as a program analyst before deciding to go to Europe to pursue a degree in Analytical Mathematics; this is what I am currently still doing.

While my first exposure to Rockets basketball was Hakeem Olajuwon in the 1995 NBA Finals, I started following the team much more closely in 2002 when a certain big man was drafted. Since then, the team culture has won me over and I have started to regard myself as a real Rockets fan.

With Morey taking over the GM role in 2006/07, I suddenly gained awareness of the potential impact of analytics upon sports.  (No, I didn’t know about Billy Beane before Morey came to the Rockets.)  I have tried to model my thinking from that angle regarding anything basketball-related ever since.  Hopefully there is something I can take from his page upon completion of my degree and my entrance into the real world.”

Ye’s first piece, ‘A Peak into Morey’s Statistical World’, is now up on Red94-Chinese.
