Thoughts of the day: it’s good to be back

  • It feels good to be back.  Thanks to all for your patience.  I moved and things have been quite hectic this past week as I continue settling in.  So what’s new since I last left?  Luckily, I’ve been able to stay up to date on the major news thanks to Royce Chang’s diligence.  I hope you are enjoying my new Rockets Daily feature.  I feel it will really come as a boon once the season kicks off.  We plan on extracting from the recap provided by every major outlet (both teams’ newspapers, both TrueHoop blogs, both SBNation blogs) for each and every game to give you the complete picture of what happened the previous night.  I really think you will enjoy this, and of course, as always, any other suggestions are welcome.

  • We’re at that part of the year now where there’s literally nothing to discuss.  I’ll have to veer off into monologue on other topics just to fill these pages, so please bear with me and we can more easily get through these next few months.
  • I’ve had a Macbook now for eight months.  Had been a PC user my entire life.  I hesitate to express this for fear of losing readership, but I can’t go back to PC’s now. Not after using this.  I feel there’s a mistaken assumption in the great PC-Mac debate.  The argument from PC users is that Mac users are foolishly paying a premium for what amounts to being simply eye-candy, and that if spending a similar amount, a PC with far superior specs could be built/created.  This is all completely true.  The flaw though is the hubristic assumption that we Mac users are all not aware of this and are operating out of ignorance.  Why is it so far-fetched that for the one tool used most by a person in his day (other than his phone), he might place value upon aesthetic appeal?
  • A friend suggested, earlier in the year, that I create a midseason report card grading the performance of each Rockets player.  I’ve never understood the appeal there.  Obviously, if you’re reading this blog, you care for my insight, but what difference does it make which letter of the alphabet I arbitrarily assign to each player?  Are you all supposed to commence in mutual masturbation because I gave Luis Scola an A for effort?
  • On a similar note, what’s the fascination, or rather, affixation, with/to power rankings?  There are few things I find more humorous than the outrage evoked from fans over what is perceived as a slighting.
  • Offseason wish-list: Luis Scola – a vertical; Yao Ming – an adamantium skeleton; Shane Battier – Trevor Ariza’s athleticism; Trevor Ariza – Shane Battier’s intelligence; Kevin Martin – the fifteen pounds Mo Taylor put on after his signing.
  • I can’t believe we’re opening the season on TNT.  I did not realize Yao Ming’s debut would be deemed so significant by the national outlets.
