SI.com: Houston Rockets trying to acquire Chris Kaman; in the lead for his services

via Houston Rockets discuss acquiring Chris Kaman from Hornets – Sam Amick – SI.com:

The Houston Rockets have had extensive discussions with the New Orleans Hornets about center Chris Kaman and appear to be in the lead to trade for him, numerous sources told SI.com.

While no deal is imminent and the pieces are still being discussed, sources said the talks have involved the Rockets’ two top-10 picks from the 2009 draft — center Hasheem Thabeet (No. 2 by Memphis) and power forward Jordan Hill (No. 8 by New York). The Rockets have other young former first-rounders who could be included as well, among them second-year forward Patrick Patterson, third-year point guard Jonny Flynn and third-year small forward Terrence Williams. They also have a 2012 first-round pick from the Knicks that the Hornets would love to obtain.

I’ve been engaging you all about such a trade for some time now on Twitter, so many of you already know my thoughts: if it’s just for some combination of the ’09 busts, the deal would be an absolute no-brainer.  No deal if they want Patterson or the Knicks pick.  Those two are off limits.

The Rockets have two goals right now and Kaman fits neatly into both: remaining competitive this season and maintaining flexibility next summer.  With his low-post repertoire, Kaman gives the Rockets a serious frontcourt rotation (depending on what happens with Patterson) while also keeping alive the Dwight Howard dream in July; Chris’ $14million comes off the books at that time, putting the team where they would have been had they/if they just stand pat with the ’09 busts.

I’ve said since the Dalembert signing that this team would make the playoffs.  If they can land Kaman, I don’t think a second round appearance is out of the question.  He’s one of the most skilled low post threats in basketball and with Dalembert and Scola, would give the Rockets one hell of a big-man combination to take on the West.  His numbers are down, but the skillset meets the ‘eye’ test.  Kaman is a load inside, with the ability to hit fadeaways off either block off the glass from strange angles (something I noted back in 2009 during a Clippers-Rockets game.)

Patterson and the Knicks pick should be off limits.  Those violate the goal of maintaining the future.  But an ’09 bust package should be automatic from Houston’s side.  Let’s hope Daryl can get it done.  Management clearly feels that competitiveness is the right choice to make this city a more attractive destination.  Landing Chris Kaman would go a long way towards that.

UPDATED at 2:50PM CST:

There’s really no opportunity cost here to a deal like Thabeet, Hill, Flynn.  It’s not like you’d be playing Kaman instead of promising youngsters who need development time; those youngsters would be the ones traded and the team has already decided that they’re not worth the effort anyway.

I realized I left out mention of Flynn above – if he’s included, I would drive him to the airport myself.

The only potential problem I see pertains to the chemistry concerns of bringing on another ‘starter’ quality player.  Dalembert has earned the job, but by all accounts, Kaman wants to start.  If he’s coming off the bench, you could see some issues.

More thoughts: To my fellow pro-tankers, the dream is and has been over for some time.  The winning streak destroyed any chance of this team landing a top lottery slot.  With their draft position sufficiently screwed, the team now has no choice but to go all in without mortgaging the future.  I don’t buy into the team’s theory of ‘make the playoffs to attract Dwight’, but if that’s the goal, you at least have to support such a deal.

On Patterson, Knicks pick, maybe Budinger: no.  These guys/entities, except for maybe Chase, are off limits.  While he’ll make a huge difference, even with Kaman, this team won’t win the title this season.  There is no point in dealing off a young piece in his acquisition.  The ’09 busts have no value anyway, so they are a case of making lemonade from lemons.

I've always liked Kaman's game. I think he and Bear could be a deadly combo in the low post for us, for the time being. Of course all three of Thabeet, Flynn and Williams would be NO's for the taking. I'm sure they'd want a fourth piece too, which seems to be the question up in the air here today. The only untouchables, IMO for that fourth piece would be Lowry, Martin, Lee and Dragic. I would be OK with any draft pick that they ask for, simply because the actual value is still yet unknown. Y'all are saying that PPat is untouchable, but I'd be OK with that too. Hill's production has been up lately, this season in 16.4 minutes he's 5.5 ppg and 5.8 rpg with .511 fg percentage. Compared to Patterson's 6.3ppg, 3.4rpg and .481 respectively in 20 minutes, there's just not a big disparity there, in fact they favor Hill, especially when you compare his .8 blocks to Pat's .4. Pat's definitely more mature basketball-wise, but I think Hill is learning and yet to reach his full potential, remember, unlike most NBA players his size, he's still relatively new to the game. I just don't think he's quite earned the "Bust" label yet. So, I'd be happy holding onto any combination of Scola, Hill, Patterson at the sacrifice of any one of them. Now we've got Parsons, I'd be ok with them asking for Bud too.

The nice thing about Kaman is his sweet jumper. His presence on offense will spread the floor and open up the paint. In which case we'll want that athletic PF like PPat and/or Hill to slash and put it down with authority.

Rahat, what if after flippin 3-4 lottery busts for kaman, we went to the knicks(who seem to be shopping stoudimire) Martin, Scola and their pick back for Amare? This would actually clear up about 2 million more of cap room and we'd have plenty of room to make a run at Dwight and resign Courtney Lee. Do you think this is Doable/would make Houston appealing to Dwight Howard? It all works in the trade machine.

In this scenario, going into next year we would have a roster of Lowry-Lee-Parsons-Stoudemire-Howard with PPat, Bud, Morris and Dragic off the bench plus whoever Morey snags in the second round. I'd say that is a championship caliber team. We probably won't have a 1st rounder in this draft because we owe one to the Nets and give the Knicks theirs back, but I say the reward outweights the opportunity cost.

I would be shocked to see Stern come in on a deal for Kaman. He's already felt the huge backlash from the previous veto, but this move would likely be a money saver and an addition of youth for NO. He wouldn't kill it.

Would you be ok with giving up OUR pick instead of the Knicks pick? I'd be ok with that.

James_Schmidt1 no. well, maybe.

James_Schmidt1 8 pts

rahathuq We have 4 picks in this upcoming draft. 2 first 2 second.

I don't think that a deal will be had with New Orleans. After the Pau fiasco, I almost dislike even talking about it. I am with Rahat, if the deal can be done without involving PP or Bud, and our draft picks stay intact, why not? I like Hill, but Kaman would certainly be an upgrade for his minutes.

As for Dalembert and Kaman splitting minutes, they are both mature players and should be professional about seeing the team improve. We are only talking about a few months anyway...

bob schmidt Agreed, Bob. You can almost see Stern hijacking it again asking for more. But we can hope. It would be a major improvement at little cost.

rahathuqbob schmidt I agree completely; if the deal just involves the '09 busts then it's a no-brainer. But something tells me that if Stern blocked our last trade with NOLA because he didn't think we were giving up enough, then he's really going to be against this because we'd be giving up basically nothing. The real advantage that I see for this trade is that we won't see a big drop-off in defensive production between our 1st and 2nd units.

rahathuqbob schmidt I trust that Morey wouldn't give them the Knick's pick or Patterson, but what appeal do the 09'ers have for the Hornets? I would love a deal for just our cache of disappointments. Would it be enough for the Hornets to shave a little salary for this season, or would they have to see potential in Thabeet, Hill, Flynn or Williams to go through with a deal with the Rockets?

As it is at this moment, Kaman is only a very short term asset for NO. I think most coaches with a bare cupboard would rather have 3 or 4 players to develop than one who is not in the predictable future. As they say, one man's garbage in another man's treasure.

bob schmidtapt2rant bob nailed it. kaman's a 0 for them. atleast with the '09 busts, they can play them and roll the dice. we aren't even playing them anymore

RedNinetyFour Rahat, do you think either Kaman or Dalembert can play at the 4?

RedNinetyFour
RedNinetyFour

nathangaber No. Only if Charles Barkley, out of retirement, is who they're guarding

nathangaber
nathangaber

RedNinetyFour That sucks. Optimally you'd want them to average more than 24 minutes each, even less if you ever go small.

RedNinetyFour
RedNinetyFour

nathangaber potential chemistry issues between Dalembert/Kaman are the one concern I would see with this deal.

nathangaber
nathangaber

RedNinetyFour That's not even what I was getting at. Center depth would be a strength of the team that isn't able to be used to full extent

nathangaber yeah i see your point, absolutely. if you could combine dalembert and kaman you'd have a poor man's alonzo mourning

RedNinetyFour I'd still do the deal though. Its turning chicken shit into chicken salad.
