A look at the Houston Rockets’ schedule for the week of December 28 through January 3

Fresh off the good feelings from their win over Memphis, the Rockets embark on a stretch of five games in seven nights, fortunately against lesser competition.  The additions of Corey Brewer and Josh Smith will help immensely as the fatigue continues to set in.  Tonight at San Antonio, the Rockets face a Spurs team that a) they have dominated in recent history and b) could care less it has been dominated.  Smith should give Houston an even greater advantage over the athletically challenged Spurs; recall that San Antonio was one of the sole good teams against whom Terrence Jones actually looked effective last season.  That impact should be amplified with the superior, but still athletic Smith.

Houston then hosts John Wall on Monday and then a surprisingly dreadful Charlotte team before heading to New Orleans for a rematch against the Pelicans.  In the teams’ previous meeting, Omer Asik and Anthony Davis hooked up to shut down Houston’s interior attack, taking all the steam out of the Motiejunas-Howard pairing.  We haven’t seen a big scoring output from Motiejunas since (though some of that can be attributed to other factors).  Then, on Saturday, Houston welcomes back Chris Bosh and his 14-17 Heat.  I still wonder if Houston was ever even a consideration in his mind or whether we were just used as leverage.  I’d say things turned out okay, especially considering the future possibilities in trade.

And here’s a peak at the West as of today where I’m not sure anything really matters except that bunch at the bottom.  The Pelicans, while fighting admirably, remain a lock to finish in the lottery, but also of relevance, Phoenix now has gained relatively comfortable possession of 8th.  That’s bad news for those holding hope that the Suns would unload Dragic at the deadline.  Oklahoma City looms in waiting as potentially the deadliest 8 seed in league history.  May God protect us.
