More on Kaman, Scola

Mark Berman of Fox 26 confirmed that while the Rockets have had discussions with the Hornets regarding Kaman, the Sports Illustrated report on the players involved is not accurate.

SI had reported that the Rockets’ offer involved Hasheem Thabeet and Jordan Hill and could also involve Patrick Patterson, Jonny Flynn, and Terrence Williams.

It’s unclear whether Berman means the report was wholly inaccurate, in terms of the players mentioned, or that the specifics were merely a bit off.  Is it still structured around ‘the busts’ or is it fundamentally different, involving, say Luis Scola?

How many here would trade Scola for Kaman if that were the price?  Such a deal would give the team room to sign two max free agents in the summer (when Kaman’s deal expires.)  The team could achieve the same objective by simply using the amnesty provision on Scola this summer but in that event, they’d still be on the hook for his remaining real salary obligations, an outcome owner Les Alexander would no doubt want to avoid.  In terms of production, would Kaman suffice as a short term replacement for Scola?

General manager Dell Demps no doubt is partial towards Scola, from past evidence, but would Stern approve such a deal?  He killed the Paul trade simply because…well, it was an absolutely awful trade for a team in that situation.  But this is different.  Perhaps Scola is the most value that can be squeezed from the expiring contract of Kaman; perhaps Scola can be moved elsewhere for some younger parts that could help in the long term.

Trading Luis would allow the Rockets to move forward Patrick Patterson into the starting lineup where he flourished last season.  This would shore up the defense and allow them to bring Kaman off the bench to serve as the new inside threat.

Really though, the upside to a Scola deal would be about this summer and flexibility.  Any other scenario that would give the team room to pursue two max free agents would require them to either swallow significant real financial obligations (remember, the amnesty provision only removes a player’s salary slot from the team’s cap; it does not relieve the team completely of the real obligation unless a similar contract is signed with a new team) or experience a drastic drop-off in short term on-court production.

Outside of Luis, I can’t even really see who else could be involved in the talks.  Lowry is off-limits.  Trading Martin would be a step back.  In my opinion, dealing Dalembert for Kaman would also be a step-back.

It’s also possible that the offer was centered around Hill and Thabeet, but rather than Patterson/Williams/Flynn as the throw-in, it was one of Lee or Dragic.  Those latter two are also free agents this summer and it’s in question whether the team would have desire to re-sign them to what they will likely be offered.  But losing either would be a huge step back in the playoff chase this season.  Atleast with Scola, for Kaman, similar production could be achieved.

Somewhat related, how great would it be if we could get Landry back in this deal? I know his production has gone down, but I sure do miss the guy.

I say get rid of Scola while you still can get some real value out of him. Dump Scola, Thabeet and Flynn on Hornets, get Kaman in return, retain Hill and Williams just for now, earn a lot of maneuvering space in the summer. A huge step forward for the Rockets just there.

alkemious I agree heavily for the Scola and Hill part, but not for the Williams part. We should send him packing at the earliest opportunity. I don't like his attitude and demeanor on the court. Any elevation in court time for him will be devastating to the team chemistry which is the only thing keeping playoff hopes alive right now.

PFs with skills equal to Scola's are pretty much a dime-a-dozen right now, and even moreso with the incoming class. His returns are definitely diminishing. It wouldn't take long to even have Patterson, Hill, or Morris playing at even Scola's best ever level. Kaman's skill set is much more unique, when healthy.

Fine, then package Luis, Thabeet and Williams, and possibly get a little extra apart from Kaman? Even better. One thing I wouldn't like them to do is get rid of Jordan Hill just yet. I still believe in this guy. Alituro

alkemious My feelings exactly on Jordan Hill. They can send Flynn too.

I would trade Scola for Kaman in a split second and never think twice about it. Why? Frees up cap room to potentially acquire D-Will and Dwight. If that plan fails, you rebuild. Also Scola really sucks this year...

a few points. If you read reports from New Orleans, the fans there want Dragic. Demps is sitting an "old" 29 yr old Kaman to give the younger players game minutes. Scola at 31 doesn't fit that theme. This deal won't happen before 2/14 because of some new CBA issues. If Scola is the player, N.O. may move him to San Antonio???? for more pieces.

I like your articles Rhat, but let me remind you, a few weeks ago you were all for the CP3 deal that would have sent Martin, Scola, some end of bench expiring contracts AND draft choices.

Now thar the season is going and Martin is turning in 25 a night, you don't want to part with him. Plus what would Lowery The All Star be doing ? Handing CP3 a towel during timeouts?

Say it-"-the CP3 deal would have been an unmitigated disaster for the Rockets."

Moving Scola or Dragic for Kaman woundn't

Tell Morey not to give away the farm, just because he has an itchy tradin' finger.

StephenJCyrier You don't make sense dude, waiting until after 2/14 won't be an issue, the deal probably wouldn't be done by then anyways. I have no idea what you're talking about with Lowry(learn to spell our players names...) giving CP3 towels, Paul was never coming here...we were getting Pau Gasol...Giving up Martin and Scola and Dragic for Pau with Nene coming along as a free agent would've given us the best front line in basketball. Our lineup would've been Lowry-Lee-Parson-Gasol-Nene with Bud, Ppat, Morris and others off the bench. that's not "an unmitigated disaster"...On that note, I'd trade Scola for Kaman in a heartbeat.

StephenJCyrier on the contrary, if there's one thing this season has told me, it's that this team would probably be in first place right now had they made that trade. lowry-lee-parsons-nene-gasol-patterson-dragic? yes, please.
