Kyle Lowry weighs leaving for starting spot

Guard Kyle Lowry, who will be a restricted free agent, said he wanted to find a starting position, but would be happy if the Rockets match any offer he receives as general manager Daryl Morey said he plans.

“I want to be a starter,” Lowry said. “I want to play. I want a chance to be that guy. Playing behind Aaron (Brooks) this year was great. I think we work together well. I want a chance to expand my game and experience new things. But I’d be happy to be back.”

I don’t think there’s any way that Daryl Morey allows Kyle Lowry to leave.  The numbers show Lowry’s importance to this team – Morey will match any offer.

Still, call me crazy, but if I’m the Los Angeles Lakers, I’m making Lowry an offer, tax implications be damned.  The Lakers absolutely must upgrade the point guard spot this summer.  They’re cheating themselves if they continue on with Derek Fisher.

With a quick glance at the list of this summer’s free agent point guards, restricted and unrestricted, we find that Ray Felton, TJ Ford, Shaun Livingston, Randy Foye, and Houston Rockets guard Kyle Lowry are at the head of the class.

Among that group, Ford, Livingston, and Foye, despite their offensive skills, would not make for good fits in the Lakers’ lineup.  The utmost concern for the Lakers at the ’1′ should be defense and either Felton or Lowry would provide just that.  With his ability to push the ball on the break, Lowry would also add a different dynamic to that team.

Lowry will be back, but he makes great sense for the Lakers.

Also, what's encouraging is the other quote from the article:

“He'd lose his mind if he left me,” Brooks said. “There's opportunities out there. I'm going to keep talking to him and keep bugging him.
“Hopefully, he makes the right decision.”
Hearing this, Lowry said: “That's my guy. Honestly, I love that guy like my brother.”

If Lowry did improve his range enough to be valuable spacing around Yao, I'd actually think this team would do better w/him as a starter. The offense wouldn't go through Brooks anyway, so you might as well have a stopper at the point to keep Yao out of foul trouble from penetrating guards. Furthermore, Brooks would absolutely torch any backup unit, and wouldn't be as big of a defensive liability. I'd do some research about the numbers Lowry has with the starters, but the team's changed so much with Martin and then Yao back that I feel like it'd be a waste of time. That and I'm lazy.

Only thing is, I don't remember Phil Jackson ever playing a PG heavy minutes who wasn't an excellent 3-point shooter. All three Lakers point guards have better 3-pt shooting numbers than KL7. I could be completely wrong, and I don't know how crucial this is to the triangle offense. Of course, the defensive upgrade at the point from Fisher to Lowry is about as big as is possible in this league. That and there's nothing to stop Lowry from focusing on and improving his 3-point shooting. Maybe he can't do it with as incredibly as J-Kidd, but he can improve.

Lowry does indeed make great sense for the Lakers. He also makes great sense for the Knicks as as well. Lets say the Knicks don't get Lebron or Bosh, but instead sign Joe Johnson and Lowry, while keeping their own free agents. Not exactly a championship team, but a major upgrade nevertheless.
