Houston Rockets 100, Phoenix Suns 82 – summer league Game 1

Most of the TrueHoop Network made the trek down to Vegas for Summer League but as I am preparing for a move, I unfortunately was not able to tag along.

I did however catch the game on NBAtv and have some observations.

This was the first summer league game I’ve ever seen, for two reasons.  First, Red94 has only been around for six months.  More importantly, during Carrol Dawson’s tenure, the Rockets never had any young talent to speak of so I never developed a taste for these games.

I’m hesitant to venture too deep into analysis and certainly won’t offer any assertions.  This is of course because I’m not familiar with the level of opposition -- no constants for predictive value.

Jermaine Taylor led all scorers with 25 points, and for the most part didn’t look like he belonged on the same court with the competition.  He was sporting a new look to his jumpshot (it wasn’t the slow-arching high release we saw last year) and was able to get a step on his defender any time he wanted.  JT was in attack mode tonight and you could see why I have been so high on him since last season.

Patrick Patterson was the star of this one, scoring 18 points on 8-9 shooting.  Kevin McHale salivated over Patterson as the game transpired and for good reason.  In his debut, Patterson showed off the versatility for which we had heard raves.  He looked very mobile rolling to the hoop on pick&rolls, displayed solid footwork and a sound post-game inside, and most surprisingly, was unconscious from the perimeter.  Pat has an odd release but with the range he showed tonight, it’s clear the Rockets hope he can spread the floor playing next to Yao Ming without giving much on the other end, unlike other shooting 4’s.

I was excited to see just how comfortable and smooth Pat looked in the post.  He showed off a nice up-and-over early on and a very fluid jump hook to the middle later in the game.  (Unfortunately, as I was experiencing technical difficulties, I was unable to capture the second of these two.)

Jordan Hill scored 16, but in all honesty, looked pretty bad.  There’s two things you want to see from Hill: 1) if he can consistently bring high energy play and 2) if he improved his offensive arsenal.  We can’t make any conclusions on the former based off of one game, but on the latter, the early verdict is a negative.  While you’ll see him score in a variety of ways in the clip below, unlike Patterson, he looked pretty awkward in doing it.  I can’t see any of Hill’s post-moves translating against actual NBA talent.  I could be wrong though, and the jury is still out, but I was fairly disappointed from what I saw from Hill today.  He’s nowhere near as polished as Patterson -- not even in the same league.

With that said, I’ve long felt that actual offense from Hill is just gravy.  All I care is that he plays defense, does the dirty work, and hits the boards.  To that end, I’m still optimistic that he can be a very productive player in this league.  If Hill doesn’t develop a post game, don’t feel crushed -- it’s not a big deal and that’s not what we need from him.

Due to the aforementioned technical difficulties, I had to take out the audio in this clip.  I thought of dubbing it to something from Lil Wayne as is seemingly par for the course for NBA highlight mixes on Youtube but am loathe to leave behind any evidence of poor taste for posterity.

Lastly, Chase Budinger scored 10 points but struggled from the field going 5-14.  Chase really has nothing to gain from Summer League so I didn’t take notice.  When you evaluate prospects in this setting, all you can really deduce is physical change (ie: “OMG SO AND SO PUT ON 20 LBS AND LOOKS AMAZING!!”), skill improvement (ie: refined post moves for bigs etc.), or increased comfort.  Chase is already maxed out in all three areas.  He has an NBA body, is about as skilled as a wing with his physical limitations can be, and has a better feel for the game than 99% of players his age.  All you hope from Chase is improved consistency on his shot because with regards to everything else, he’s pretty much maxed out his capabilities.

Well, gg. I forgot to close the hyperlink.

Now my comment is all kinds of messed up.

I am bullish on this upcoming trade deadline for a deal to be worked out in our favor, but the amount of trade exceptions that have been generated by other teams also raises concerns. Since trade exceptions can't be used to sign free agents, and can't be combined with other exceptions/players as a part of a larger deal, but can only be used to absorb trades, teams with trade exceptions will also be shopping around the deadline. The major difference is that the exceptions this year have been huge, so they will be able to absorb almost any contract they choose. The one year expiration period pretty much leaves the deadline, draft day, and very early into the next off-season as viable opportunities to use the exception.

Basically, what I'm asking is this:
Given that most steals come from teams trying to shed salary, and that teams with exceptions can't use them to overpay players (since they can only come from trades, excepting perhaps S&Ts), will the many and vast trade exceptions enable those teams to steal valuable contracts from others trying to shed salary?

Which is better for a bottom line? Trading a $12 million player for a $2 million player with 3 years left (say $7 million), or an $11 million expiring contract? Unless there are special financial considerations in a mid-season trade for an expiring contract (I did not find one), the exception is going to enable a better deal for a salary-shedding team.

I'm sure that, with our assets, we can trade with teams seeking assets or pieces, but I'm not sure that we can take advantage of "fire sales" with so many exceptions floating around.

Caught the second half of the first game. I agree Hill looks way uncomfortable out there. There's a few things you could attribute that to. Approaching the game newly from a center's perspective for one, the other could be just being under close scrutiny from someone like Sikma. Like being an up and coming wing with Larry Bird coaching. When the coach is showing you his own highlight reel as an example of what he expects from you. A bar has been set and it's right there on the bench watching your every move. Of course this is just being hopelessly optimistic, but I want the young fella to succeed, because he seems to have the skills, just hope all that is lacking is some maturity and experience.

Being a fan of the underdog, I am enjoying watching JTs progress, from small school star to NBA hopefull. A major difference in JT vs. Wafer, is that JT approaches the game humbly. Every possesion gets the same amount of effort. One of the announcers said "I think someone forgot to tell JT that this was summer league" That says alot about his work ethic and attitude. The little time I watched, him, he kinda seems like a Lowry/Martin hybrid, with the quickness and ability to shoot off the dribble of Martin, but with the bulk and fearlessness Lowry shows during dribble penetration. Not afraid to pass from dribble penetration but if the outlet fails again and again, then it's time to go after and-1s. Not someone the opposition will look foward to chasing around all night.

In contrast to JT's background, Pat-Pat, looks well coached, refined and ready to go as most Kentucky products. I think he's the reason they're grooming Hill at center is because of Pat's immediate value at PF surpassing his own.

But, Rahat I'm with you, not witnessing any SL games in the past, coupled with our outstanding record over the past 5 years makes me wonder how much effort and emphasis the other teams are putting in. If the others re putting what the Rox are into the SL, then id bodes well for us and our young guys having such a high success level. If other teams are blowing the SL off, then it makes me proud to be a fan of such a team that seizes every opportunity it can to improve itself.

    Third game over. Yeech.
Patterson has a ways to go.But I expect he'll get there.
Hill is not impressing at all. Understand he's learning a new position, but he's being out-played by just about everybody he's facing.Right now, either Chuck is going to be the back-up C.
Bud just doesn't attack the basket aggressively off the dribble.
Taylor better learn he's not good enough to dribble thru 2-3 defenders. On other hand he made several nice passes that were not converted.
Ishmael better learn to take the open 3 if he wants to play in the NBA.

I am currently watching the Rockets vs. Trailblazers game and had a few thoughts that I wanted to tell someone.

first off, with Jordan Hill, I watched the game vs Phoenix, and he looked like a deer in head lights at times! I know it was only the first game but come on! Why does it always seem like we have 2 different forward in our rotation? Hill- the defender, Paterson- offense. Like last season with David Andersen- great shooter and poor defender, and Jeffries- Great energy and defense guy, poor coordination and offensive skills. When are we going to find the Power Forward with both skills?

Anyway, on offense with a healthy Yao we don't need a great offensive player bc Yao is that good, he can make up for the lack of skills in player X.

I know that I am biased but lets say that Yao is healthy for the entire season. He makes life so much easier for everyone on the roster. We all know why so I will not go into detail, spread floor for shooters, draws double teams and finds open man, clogs the lane on D, ex-cetera. Now here comes the biased part, I think we can make a very deep playoff run, think Western conference finals. We have an amazing group of players. Guys that can play very well together. I know that there are some chemistry concerns out there but it is always much easier to incorporate a big guy than a guard. Ok Brooks, Ariza, Martin, Scola, Yao. I love our starting lineup, and we have almost all energy guys on the bench.

Rahat what are your thoughts on when the next "fire sale" will happen? How would we go about with a petition to change the rockets uniforms? If anyone would be able to pull something like that off it would be you. Oh and heres to Jordan Hill, hopefully he just had first game jitters.

I love the updates, keep them coming.

    Go Rockets.

Am I crazy but I think Alexander Johnson is better then Hill.

Was going to do a snarky comparison and ran across this while doing some background research on a couple of player's rookie yrs:
    Player A-45 games,10.1 minutes. .385,.200 3pt,.655 FT .5 assists/game,1.2 rebounds,2.9ppg
    Player B-31 games, 9.8 minutes. .377,.227 3pt,.717 FT .5 assists/game,1.5 rebounds,4.1ppg

    Player A? Kevin Martin.
    Player B? Jermaine Taylor.

Not saying Taylor is going to become the reliably effecient scoring machine Martin worked to become, but it is kind of interesting.(Martin dramatically increased his shooting %s across board in second yr and became a 20pp scorer in his third.Still has never been an assist machine,w/a career of 1.9/game and 2.3/game as a Rocket.)

After 2 games Rocket assist leaders are:
    Smith 7
    JT 6
    Bud 5
    Ahearn 4
    Lewis 4

    Kevin,
Believe me, I wish I could. Those things are hideous.

    Charlie Boy,
while its ugly, i don't see the aesthetics of the release being a problem in terms of accuracy/getting blocked.

    tah,
that's true. that's why i don't want to come out and say something like "JT looks ready to be the starter!" he looked great but its all relative.

    bob schmidt,
kind of ironic that there were few turnovers yet we have awful PG's, lol.

    Stephen,
completely agree. people are making it seem like JT was just chucking but it was all within the flow. he was just attacking every chance he got.

    jodorowski,
i missed the post game interview.

    Kade,
i had a heart attack when i read houston had signed him.

    purvisshort,
thanks, i appreciate that. the discussion here has been great the past few weeks and I hope it continues next season. great to see the same names. and i don't foresee myself or red94 going anywhere anytime soon.

I watched most of the game after the first quarter Friday. Initial reaction was how lousy PHX's defense was. Clearly, they "install" the offense before the defense in PHX. With that caveat, I was pleasantly surprised how often the Rox got the ball in the paint on offense. I'd say the players know what style of play impresses the coaches. Few thoughts:

    (1) Patterson's looks ready to step in and play--just not too many holes in his game. It will be interesting to see how he adapts to the speed of the NBA game, and I could not agree more about his demeanor, he's wise beyond his years.

    (2) And this comes from a guy who is super high on Hill's offensive upside: he continues to struggle playing one-on-one defense down low. Not sure whether it's lack of leg strength, core strength or interest, but his guy can get to the rim every time he catches it on the block. I realize what he brings in blocks off ball, but regardless of that skill and his utility on offense, his porous defense will become an obstacle to more playing time.

    (3) JT just has a nose for the basket. And, I agree with Stephen's take that it's not vintage Francis or Marbury style ball-hogging: he's just in relentless pursuit of the rim. I like that. And the jumper looked OK.

Lastly, to pile on to others' comments, Rahat, thanks for creating such a great board. It's middle of July, and I have somewhere people are posting intelligent and otherwise interesting perspectives on Rox basketball. When you move on to bigger and better things, we will all be sorry.

Houston,New Orleans,it's all the same to ESPN.
If it isn't in the East or in LA,it's all one big chunk of flyover country.

i've seen both stories on luther head. good ol' information age
  • Kade
Strange, on ESPN says Head signed with NO
  • Kade
The Rockets and free agent guard Luther Head have agreed to a two-year contract worth $2.3 million. The second year is a player option.

This may seem silly but what really impressed me was Patterson's post game interview. He just oozes maturity and confidence and you can tell that being at Kentucky taught him how to handle the bright lights not just on the court, but after in analyzing himself and what he needs to do with what seems like a very calm and intelligent perspective. ABSOLUTELY LOVE HIM!

Taped the game and watched it Fri night.(Don't want to think what that says of my social life that I'd rather watch a Rockets SL game than go out in LA on a Fri night :) ).

From comments before I saw game I thought Taylor was just jacking up shots. Watching I only saw him force maybe 4 shots and 2 of those were drives. The rest were open Js,hard drives against a non-existant defense(is it in the water in Phoenix?)and pushing the ball on break. On Rockets second possession JT drove baseline, made great pass to Bud who missed open 3. Next possession JT threw it away passing between 2 players. Saw him a couple of times try to dribble penetrate, got cut off, gave it up in time for team to run a set.(Where I've watched countless players this Summer dribble out clock only to jack up a bad shot.)
Pretty obvious that in this SL,like in D-League stints,Taylor is being counted on as featured scorer.

Interesting Leunen got so much playing time. Either showcase or Rockets are taking hard look to see if he could be deep bench rotation player, taking Andersen's spot as spacing PF.

Like all else, impressed w/Patterson's play. Yes his shot does look like he's leaning into it,but it's quick and if he's open space and a quick release will overcome his low starting point.

Hill is a work in progress. Prob never going to be a star/top-echelon player, but a solid role player w/a nice career.

Nice that it looks core of second unit is getting alot of time together-JT,Bud,Hill,perhaps Patterson.

It was good to see some Rocket basketball last night, tonight it will be Rox vs Mavs at 9 EDT.

    Thoughts:
Great hands displayed by Hill, Patterson, Taylor, and Bud. Few turnovers, a pleasant respite from TA.

Lots of impressives moves from Hill, Bud, Taylor, and Patterson. I sure liked what I saw..... Lots of upside without any big problem areas. Looking good from my perspective.

was at the vegas league last year, it was great and you could really tell development of some of the athletes. Sophomore traditionally do well at the league though so I'm not sure how much stock you should put into them doing much better than their competition.
  • Charlie Boy
Pat may need to work on that release, i see him getting blocked alot if he doesnt raise it a few degrees. hill to me seemed somewhat uncomfortable playing center, maybe he's thinking about it too much and pressuring himself even more after the FA frenzy and many now saying Hill is slated to be yao's backup if nothing else happens, game is 99% mental. JT reminds me alot of von wafer, if he can add passing to his list of skills he could turn into something special, his burst off the ball is phenomenal and is athletic enough to be a good defender. Chase is Chase RH, he's Spicoli from Ridgemont High and strikes me as just kinda going through the motions waiting for the season, like you im not at all concerned, he amps it up when it counts. apart from all that we totally own the vegas league in the last few years, we have only lost like 3 times in 5 years or something like that
  • Kevin
This has nothing to do with the post, but.......seeing a lot of the Heat jerseys today made me hate our jerseys even more. You need to start some movement. New jerseys that say Houston on them, and have a modern (not 80s interpretation of the future) cut. Ever since you posted about it, it's all I can think about. The ugly, cheap-looking, spaceman jerseys need to go ASAP!
