href="http://www.red94.net/live-account-match-houston-rockets-indiana-pacers/9366/" target="_blank">here. I stopped writing at overtime wanting to save things for this post-game writeup. What an absolutely crazy game. We talked to McHale, Dragic, Chandler, and Lee all after the game, and I’m still not completely sure what happened. It seems clear though, from their comments, that the other players were not made aware that Dragic had six fouls. I won’t pin the loss on McHale, simply because it took a miraculous sequence to even have the team back in the game, but man…what a costly, costly blunder.

To end the fourth, the Rockets played the free throw game, tying things up by going for the quick 2 when down 3, and then getting the bailout free throw miss by Collison. That set Dragic up to tie the game at the line.

In overtime, things quickly got completely out of hand with the Pacers going up 101-95. But the Rockets miraculously came back, scoring five points in seven seconds, cutting the deficit to 1. After a Dragic pullup 3, the Rockets forced a turnover, trapping the ballhandler, leading to a Parsons steal and layup. Then came maybe the most crucial sequence of the game.

Down 1 with 17 seconds remaining, the Rockets had to foul. But Goran Dragic had 5 fouls. Off a pick, Chandler Parsons switched off of Danny Granger, leaving Dragic alone with the star small forward. Dragic waited for a bit and then eventually fouled, apparently deciding he could not allow more time to come off the clock.

Granger hit both free throws, putting the Pacers up 3. Chandler Parsons scored a driving layup to cut it to 1. Collison missed another free throw.

Down just 2, Chandler Parsons was fouled on a drive by Granger and then missed a step back ‘3’ that would have won it.

Thoughts:

The mix-up with Dragic was the talk of the game afterwards. Why was he in the game? Why did they switch? Did the rest of the team know Dragic had 5?

I understand the rationale for leaving Dragic in the game. He’s good at applying pressure and if you somehow came up with the steal, you’d want him on the court for the fastbreak opportunity. But no one could figure out why they switched.

It seemed from the video [above] that the other players weren’t made aware of the Dragic foul situation. Had they been, they surely would not have allowed for Dragic to be alone with Granger. There should not have been a switch.

From the final possession, you saw how badly they needed Dragic. Parsons is great at slashing off the kickout, but an isolation creator he is not.

It was interesting that twice, late in this game, while down 3, the Rockets elected to go for the quick 2 and foul rather than take the 3. Both times it worked out for them. I feel that teams, or at least the Rockets, have a ridiculous conversion rate in these situations. Morey and company probably advise in favor of this approach due to the odds: with the defense geared against a 3, the probability of scoring a quick 2 is probably at its very highest. Many times, the defense concedes the hoop. Combine this with the probability of a missed free throw and those figures probably come out better than the chances of making a contested ‘3’. If you have enough time and don’t have a wide open 3, I think it’s best to take the route the Rockets took.

Another interesting note: the stat geek community preaches that there is a greater probability of scoring on a final possession by running a set team play rather than through running an ‘isolation’ play. That’s why I find it so interesting that the team ISOed Parsons on that final play. The mentality is absolutely fascinating. It’s almost like teams think, “we have to do an ISO now.” I wonder why this is. Is it because more passes increase the likelihood of a turnover? In any event, with 14 seconds left–an absolute eternity–I would have run a set play for Scola in the post, in that situation.

Rapid Reaction: Houston Rockets 96, OKC Thunder 95

Rapid Reaction
<guid

Late in the fourth, the place was deafening. I cannot imagine what the playoffs must feel like. I cannot imagine what the ’94 playoffs must have felt like. My God, I hope we make it this season.

For some reason, the Rockets just match up very well with the Thunder, despite the latter being the league’s best team. If we faced them in the postseason, I don’t know that I’d bet against the Rockets. Honestly, I don’t know. This is contrast to the Lakers and Clippers against whom I don’t think we’d stand a chance.

It was so refreshing to see Kevin McHale go with Samuel Dalembert and Patrick Patterson down the stretch. Scola’s defense, or lack thereof, has simply lost this team far too many games. As we go forward, I’d like to see the team gradually increase Patterson’s minutes while gradually decreasing Luis’. Get the Argentinian involved early, let him help the team off to a fast start, but sit him when it gets tight.

I watched James Harden actually comb his beard for a few minutes after the game, in the lockerroom. He really went to work on it. Someone then handed him some lotion and I thought he was going to apply the lotion on his face, over the beard. This might sound strange, but I actually have a friend with a similarly sized beard and this is what he does – he lotions the beard. But James Harden did not lotion his beard; he applied it on his neck.

I’d be shocked if this hasn’t been uploaded already on Youtube, maybe by one of you, but at the quarter break, an event left me speechless. It was that game where you have to guess the word based on the letters you’re already seeing. So it finally came down to ‘L-O-S-C-_-_-_-_’…and the guy guessed ‘Los Angeles.’
…

Pause a moment and let that sink in. I don’t blame him for not knowing it was ‘Los Cabos’….but really? class="thn-reaction-summary">
Five Things We Saw

What a horrific trainwreck the end of that game was. The Horents played like the New Orleans Hornets, while the Rockets caved into to every bad tendency and vacillation that’s made them look timid against this league’s more dynamic outfits. Only through a small miracle (Jason Smith’s missed jumper at the end of regulation), typically awful Hornets offense and some gigantic Sam Dalembert plays (yup, still feels weird to write that) did the Rockets escape this one with their shirts intact. I’d breathe a sigh of relief if I didn’t feel a foreboding sense of doom clouding over Houston called the San Antonio Spurs.

Also a week ago, I complained liberally about Martin’s inability to put together the kind of scoring efficiency that he had in past years, that is, a ton of threes and free throw attempts even without brilliant numbers from the field. Over the last five games, there’s been an uptick in Martin’s attempts from the line of over two a game (up to almost six a game), and the Rockets have, not so surprisingly, won a lot more. In Thursday night’s victory over New Orleans, his three-point shooting returned, if only for one brilliant half. Any true renaissance for these Rockets will involve a return to form for Martin.

In the Morey Era, it’s seemed that every year has brought with it some surprise rookie over which the general Rockets populace could drool at the endless potential (Carl Landry, Chase Budinger, Patrick Patterson, even Ish Smith), and this year’s no different as Chandler Parsons has taken all bystanders by storm. Strangely, though, there does seem to be one real change from past years: Parsons’ numbers really aren’t all that great. Instead, it’s been the giant wing’s instincts that have gained him the fawning of Rockets fans, a shift in attention that can be applauded. The highlight dunks have been genuinely riveting, but his ability to swing the ball to the right spot and overall activity in the transition offense, as well as his exceptionally long limbs that can one day be turned into dangerous defensive weapons, all mark Parsons as more than a passing fancy for Houston followers.

Courtney Lee’s jumper. Oh yes. That’s all there really is to say about tonight’s comeback by Lee. Yeah, he played some minutes the other day, but tonight, Lee swallowed the court, being just about everywhere that the Rockets made a good play, at least until the ultimate collapse that was the Rockets’ fourth quarter. Otherwise, more please.

So, that Chris Kaman fella really doesn’t seem like he should be playing NBA basketball for a living. Maybe as a hobby on one of those NBA2K video games that seem to receive so much acclaim, but certainly not as an occupation. Just a few years ago, Kaman operated as one of the NBA’s most dangerous post presences, a guy who had manifold ways of scoring on this league’s weaker post defenders. Maybe it’s the years of injuries or the disheartening deal that sent Kaman to yet another miserable rebuilding organization; whatever it might be, Kaman doesn’t have the heart for this game anymore, or any of the other requisite body parts apparently.

Rapid Reaction: Houston Rockets 97, Detroit Pistons 80

Rapid Reaction

Five Things We Saw

Wooo. Rockets fans got to see a close game, which is great, even if it resulted in yet another road loss, the team’s sixth of the year, which is miserable. Overtime was sort of miserable offensively (first points were scored by Duncan at the 2:41 mark on a free throw, after he had just missed three consecutive ones at the charity stripe), but it’s always nice to see some meaningful basketball, even when the faithful Rockets red have to walk away sighing.

For the first time against a team in what seems like ages, the Houston Rockets started a game off well Wednesday night, dropping in 27 in the first quarter to lead the Spurs by four. Houston shot 65% in that first quarter, including Scola’s aforementioned 14 points on 7-10 shooting.

As great as that 13-20 first quarter shooting was, those 27 points were emblematic of the Rockets’ biggest flaw on offense in this era of Houston basketball: these guys just shoot jumpers. Though a couple of Scola’s buckets came off of layups, almost every made field goal in that first quarter came from outside of the paint, thereby exemplifying the exact reasons for the fickleness of the Rockets’ offense. Sometimes those jumpers will fall, and sometimes they won’t; regardless, the current Rockets will have to keep taking them without a legitimate post presence or elite pick-and-roll player.

That Tony Parker, eh? While San Antonio grasps at straws for some play-making in the wake of Manu Ginobili’s purportedly season-killing injury, Parker came through with 24 points and seven assists against one of the league’s best point guard defenders in Lowry, who had consistent trouble staying in front of Parker and fighting through screens, leaving his big men on an island with the Frenchman. You can guess how most of those ended.

Yikes. This Rockets’ center rotation really looks to be about the worst in the NBA, producing a whole lot of not much against a couple of productive bigs in living legend Tim Duncan and adequate Brazilian backup Tiago Splitter. Hill got in some decent minutes, but no Rockets big could contain Duncan in crunch time. Can’t imagine this problem will get much better against big combos in Portland, Los Angeles and Memphis out here in the West.

Rapid Reaction: Houston Rockets 82, Charlotte Bobcats 70

Rapid Reaction
<guid

It worked for small stretches, but ended like fool’s gold.

Not a whole lot of positive to say about Houston’s performance. They were obliterated on the inside, conceded wide open jumpers in an effort to pack the paint, and played like a team with a considerable front court weaknesses should. The problems down low forced them to guard Kobe one on one, and he made his shots.

Chase Budinger was his usual sneaky self, finishing with a solid stat sheet game. Really fun watching him play within himself, but when he reaches outside his limitations things get ugly in a hurry.

The Rockets didn’t get to the free-throw line (attempting 7 to the Lakers’ 27) and settled on the perimeter all night. They launched 31 three-pointers to L.A.’s 14.
